Isaiah is a majestic prophetic work of immense scope, often called the “fifth gospel” for its rich vision of the Messiah. It begins with fiery pronouncements of judgment against Judah for its rebellion and injustice, warning that God will use foreign nations as his instruments of discipline. Yet woven throughout these warnings are some of scripture’s most profound promises of hope and restoration. The book’s second half shifts to a tone of comfort for God’s people in exile, declaring that their God is the sovereign Creator who will bring them home. At its heart are the prophecies of the Servant of the LORD, who will suffer for the sins of the people before being exalted, and the coming King who will establish a new heavens and a new earth where righteousness dwells.
