Isaiah 14

The AIT Bible

For Yahweh will have compassion on Jacob and will again choose Israel, and he will settle them on their own soil; and the sojourner will join himself to them, and they will attach themselves to the house of Jacob.

And peoples will take them and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will take possession of them on the soil of Yahweh as male and female servants; and they will take captive their captors and will rule over their oppressors.

A Taunt Against Babylon's King

And it will be, on the day Yahweh gives you rest from your pain and from your turmoil and from the hard service that was worked on you,

you will take up this taunt-song against the king of Babylon and say: How the oppressor has ceased! How the fury has ceased!

Yahweh has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of rulers—

the one striking peoples in wrath with an unceasing blow, ruling nations in anger with a persecution none held back.

The whole earth is at rest, is quiet; they break forth in joyful song.

Even the cypresses rejoice over you, the cedars of Lebanon: ‘Since you lay down, no woodcutter comes up against us.’

Sheol below is stirred up for you, to meet you at your coming; it rouses the shades for you, all the leaders of the earth; it raises from their thrones all the kings of the nations.

All of them respond and say to you: ‘You too have become weak like us; you have been made comparable to us!’

Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, the sound of your harps; beneath you maggots are spread out, and worms are your covering.

How you have fallen from heaven, O shining one, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low!

And you—you said in your heart: ‘I will ascend to the heavens; above the stars of God I will lift up my throne; and I will sit on the mount of assembly, in the far reaches of the north.’

‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’

Yet you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit.

Those who see you stare at you, they ponder over you: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms,

who made the world like the wilderness and tore down its cities, who did not open the way home for his prisoners?’

All the kings of the nations, all of them, lie in glory, each in his own house.

But you are cast out from your grave like a rejected shoot, clothed with the slain, those pierced by the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit, like a trampled corpse.

You will not be united with them in burial, for you ruined your land, you killed your people. May the offspring of evildoers never be named again!

Prepare a place of slaughter for his sons because of the iniquity of their fathers, lest they rise and possess the earth and fill the face of the world with cities.

‘And I will rise up against them,’ declares Yahweh of hosts, ‘and I will cut off from Babylon name and remnant, offspring and posterity,’ declares Yahweh.

‘And I will make it a possession for the hedgehog, and pools of water, and I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,’ declares Yahweh of hosts.

An Oracle Concerning Assyria

Yahweh of hosts has sworn, saying: ‘Surely, as I have planned, so it shall be, and as I have purposed, so it shall stand:

to break Assyria in my land, and on my mountains I will trample him; then his yoke will depart from them, and his burden will depart from their shoulder.’

This is the plan planned against all the earth, and this is the hand stretched out against all the nations.

For Yahweh of hosts has planned, and who can annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?

An Oracle Concerning Philistia

In the year that King Ahaz died, this oracle came:

Do not rejoice, all of you Philistia, that the rod that struck you is broken; for from the root of a serpent will come forth a viper, and its fruit will be a flying fiery serpent.

And the firstborn of the poor will graze, and the needy will lie down in safety; but I will put your root to death with famine, and it will kill your remnant.

Wail, O gate! Cry out, O city! You are melted away, all of you, Philistia! For from the north smoke comes, and there is no straggler in his ranks.

And what will one answer the messengers of the nation? That Yahweh has founded Zion, and in her the afflicted of his people take refuge.
