Who is this coming from Edom, in crimson-stained garments from Bozrah? This one splendid in his clothing, striding in the greatness of his strength? “It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.”
Why is your clothing red, and your garments like one who treads in the winepress?
“I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples no man was with me. I trod them in my anger and trampled them in my wrath; their lifeblood spattered on my garments, and I stained all my clothing.
For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redeemed had come.
I looked, but there was no helper; I was appalled, but there was no one to sustain. So my own arm brought me salvation, and my wrath—it sustained me.
I trod down peoples in my anger and made them drunk in my wrath, and I brought their lifeblood down to the earth.”
The acts of loyal love of Yahweh I will recall, the praises of Yahweh, according to all that Yahweh has dealt out to us—the abundant goodness to the house of Israel that he dealt to them according to his compassion and according to the abundance of his acts of loyal love.
For he said, “Surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely”; and he became their Savior.
In all their distress he was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his compassion he himself redeemed them, and he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.
But they rebelled and grieved his holy Spirit; so he turned to be their enemy, and he himself fought against them.
Then he remembered the days of old, Moses and his people. Where is the one who brought them up out of the sea, with the shepherd of his flock? Where is the one who put within him his holy Spirit,
who made his glorious arm go at the right hand of Moses, who split the waters before them to make for himself an everlasting name,
who led them through the deeps? Like a horse in the wilderness, they did not stumble.
Like cattle that go down into the valley, the Spirit of Yahweh gave them rest. So you led your people, to make for yourself a glorious name.
Look down from heaven and see, from your holy and glorious lofty dwelling. Where is your zeal and your mighty deeds? The stirring of your inmost being and your compassion toward me are withheld.
For you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, Yahweh, are our Father; our Redeemer from of old is your name.
Why, Yahweh, do you make us wander from your ways and harden our heart against fearing you? Return, for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance.
For a little while your holy people possessed it; our foes have trampled down your sanctuary.
We have become like those over whom you have never ruled, over whom your name has not been called. Oh that you would tear open the heavens and come down, that the mountains would quake at your presence—
