Exodus 23

The AIT Bible

Justice and Righteousness

You shall not carry a false report; do not join hands with the wicked to be a malicious witness.

You shall not follow the many into evil, nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after the many to pervert justice.

Neither shall you show favor to a poor man in his dispute.

When you come upon your enemy’s ox or his donkey going astray, you shall surely return it to him.

When you see the donkey of the one who hates you lying down under its burden, you shall refrain from leaving it to him; you shall surely release it with him.

You shall not pervert the justice due to your needy one in his dispute.

Keep far from a false matter, and do not kill the innocent and the righteous, for I will not acquit the wicked.

You shall not take a bribe, for the bribe blinds the clear-sighted and subverts the words of the righteous.

You shall not oppress a sojourner, for you yourselves know the life of the sojourner, since you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

Sabbaths and Annual Feasts

For six years you shall sow your land and gather in its produce,

but the seventh you shall let it rest and lie fallow, that the needy of your people may eat; and what they leave, the wild animals of the field may eat. You shall do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove.

Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall cease, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your maidservant and the sojourner may be refreshed.

In all that I have said to you, be on guard; and the name of other gods you shall not mention — it shall not be heard on your lips.

Three times in the year you shall hold a feast to me.

You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the appointed time in the month of Abib, for in it you came out of Egypt; and none shall appear before me empty-handed.

Also the Feast of Harvest, the firstfruits of your labors that you sow in the field; and the Feast of Ingathering at the going out of the year, when you gather in your labors from the field.

Three times in the year all your males shall appear before the Lord Yahweh.

You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with anything leavened, nor shall the fat of my feast remain overnight until morning.

The choicest of the firstfruits of your ground you shall bring to the house of Yahweh your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.

Conquest and Covenant Promises

Behold, I am sending a messenger before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared.

Be on guard before him and listen to his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression, for my name is within him.

But if you indeed listen to his voice and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

For my messenger will go before you and bring you to the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Canaanite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, and I will annihilate them.

You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor act according to their deeds; but you shall utterly tear them down and completely shatter their sacred pillars.

You shall serve Yahweh your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will remove sickness from your midst.

None in your land shall miscarry or be barren; the number of your days I will fulfill.

I will send my terror before you and throw into confusion all the people among whom you come, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you.

And I will send the hornet before you, and it will drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite from before you.

I will not drive them out from before you in a single year, lest the land become a desolation and the wild animals of the field multiply against you.

Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you have become fruitful and take possession of the land.

And I will set your border from the Sea of Reeds to the Sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness to the River; for I will give the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you shall drive them out from before you.

You shall not cut a covenant with them or with their gods.

They shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against me; for if you serve their gods, it will surely become a snare to you.
