1If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he shall repay five head of cattle for the ox and four of the flock for the sheep.
2If the thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there is no bloodguilt for him.
3If the sun has risen upon him, there is bloodguilt for him. He must surely make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.
4If what was stolen is actually found alive in his possession — whether ox or donkey or sheep — he shall make restitution twofold.
5When a man lets his livestock graze over a field or vineyard, and lets it loose so that it grazes in another man’s field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard.
6When fire breaks out and finds thorns, so that a stack of grain or the standing grain or the field is consumed, the one who started the fire must surely make full restitution.
7When a man gives his neighbor silver or goods to keep, and it is stolen from the man’s house — if the thief is found, he shall make restitution twofold.
8If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall be brought near to God, to determine whether or not he has laid his hand on his neighbor’s property.
9In every case of breach of trust — concerning an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any lost thing about which someone says, ‘This is it’ — the case of both parties shall come before God; the one whom God condemns shall make restitution twofold to his neighbor.
10When a man gives his neighbor a donkey or an ox or a sheep or any animal to keep, and it dies or is injured or is driven off, with no one seeing —
11an oath before Yahweh shall be between the two of them, that he has not laid his hand on his neighbor’s property; its owner shall accept this, and the other need not make restitution.
12But if it was in fact stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner.
13If it was in fact torn by a beast, he shall bring it as evidence; he shall not make restitution for what was torn.
14When a man borrows anything from his neighbor, and it is injured or dies while its owner is not present with it, he shall surely make restitution.
15If its owner was present with it, he need not make restitution; if it was hired, it came for its hire.
16When a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he must surely pay the bride-price for her to be his wife.
17If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall weigh out silver equal to the bride-price for virgins.
18You shall not let a sorceress live.
19Anyone who lies with an animal shall surely be put to death.
20Whoever sacrifices to any god shall be devoted to destruction — except to Yahweh alone.
21You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.
22You shall not afflict any widow or orphan.
23If you do at all afflict him, and he cries out at all to me, I will surely hear his cry.
24My anger will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives will become widows and your children orphans.
25If you lend silver to my people, to the poor among you, you shall not be like a creditor to him; you shall not lay interest upon him.
26If you take your neighbor’s cloak in pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down;
27for it is his only covering — it is his cloak for his skin. In what shall he lie down? And when he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am gracious.
28You shall not revile God, nor curse a leader among your people.
29You shall not hold back the fullness of your harvest or the outflow of your presses. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to me.
30You shall do the same with your ox and your flock: seven days it shall remain with its mother; on the eighth day you shall give it to me.
31You shall be men of holiness to me. You shall not eat any flesh torn by beasts in the field; you shall throw it to the dogs.
