Leviticus 17

The AIT Bible

The Proper Place of Sacrifice

1And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2“Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the sons of Israel, and say to them: This is the word that Yahweh has commanded, saying,

3Any man from the house of Israel who slaughters an ox or a lamb or a goat in the camp, or who slaughters it outside the camp,

4and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to present it as an offering to Yahweh before the tabernacle of Yahweh—bloodguilt shall be reckoned to that man; he has shed blood, and that man shall be cut off from the midst of his people.

5so that the sons of Israel may bring their sacrifices that they are sacrificing in the open field—that they may bring them to Yahweh, to the entrance of the tent of meeting, to the priest, and sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to Yahweh.

6And the priest shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of Yahweh at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and burn the fat as a pleasing aroma to Yahweh.

7And they shall no longer sacrifice their sacrifices to the goat-demons, after which they whore. This shall be a perpetual statute for them throughout their generations.

8And to them you shall say: Any man from the house of Israel, or from the sojourner who sojourns among them, who offers up a burnt offering or a sacrifice

9and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it to Yahweh—that man shall be cut off from his people.

The Prohibition of Eating Blood

10And any man from the house of Israel, or from the sojourner who sojourns among them, who eats any blood—I will set my face against the person who eats the blood, and I will cut her off from the midst of her people.

11For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I myself have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your lives; for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.

12Therefore I have said to the sons of Israel: No one among you shall eat blood, nor shall the sojourner who sojourns among you eat blood.

13And any man from the sons of Israel, or from the sojourner who sojourns among them, who hunts game—a beast or a bird that may be eaten—he shall pour out its blood and cover it with dust.

14For the life of all flesh—its blood is in its life. So I said to the sons of Israel: You shall not eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood; everyone who eats it shall be cut off.

Eating Animals Found Dead

15And every person who eats what died of itself or was torn by beasts, whether native or sojourner, shall wash his garments and bathe in water, and be unclean until the evening; then he shall be clean.

16But if he does not wash and does not bathe his flesh, then he shall bear his iniquity.”
