1And Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,
2“Speak to the sons of Israel, saying: These are the living creatures that you may eat from among all the animals that are on the earth.
3Any animal that has a divided hoof, cleft in two, and that chews the cud—that you may eat.
4Only these you shall not eat, from those that chew the cud or that have a divided hoof: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not have a divided hoof—it is unclean for you.
5And the rock badger, because it chews the cud but does not have a divided hoof—it is unclean for you.
6And the hare, because it chews the cud but does not have a divided hoof—it is unclean for you.
7And the pig, because it has a divided hoof, cleft in two, but does not chew the cud—it is unclean for you.
8From their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch; they are unclean for you.
9These you may eat, from all that are in the waters: anything that has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas and in the streams—those you may eat.
10But anything that does not have fins and scales, in the seas and in the streams, among all the swarming things of the waters and among all the living creatures that are in the waters—they are a detestable thing to you.
11They shall be a detestable thing to you; from their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall detest.
12Anything in the waters that does not have fins and scales is a detestable thing to you.
13And these you shall detest among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are a detestable thing: the eagle, the vulture, and the black vulture,
14and the kite, and the falcon after its kind,
15every raven after its kind,
16and the ostrich, and the nighthawk, and the seagull, and the hawk after its kind,
17and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,
18and the white owl, and the pelican, and the carrion vulture,
19and the stork, the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.
20Every winged swarming thing that goes on all fours is a detestable thing to you.
21Yet these you may eat, from among all the winged swarming things that go on all fours: those that have jointed legs above their feet, with which to leap on the ground.
22These of them you may eat: the locust after its kind, the bald locust after its kind, the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind.
23But every other winged swarming thing that has four legs is a detestable thing to you.
24And by these you would make yourselves unclean; anyone who touches their carcasses shall be unclean until the evening,
25and anyone who carries any of their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening.
26As for every animal that parts the hoof but is not completely cloven-footed, and does not chew the cud, they are unclean for you; anyone who touches them shall be unclean.
27And every creature that goes on its paws, among all the living creatures that go on all fours—they are unclean for you; anyone who touches their carcasses shall be unclean until the evening,
28and the one who carries their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening; they are unclean for you.
29And these are for you the unclean among the swarming things that swarm on the earth: the mole, and the mouse, and the great lizard after its kind,
30and the gecko, and the great lizard, and the wall lizard, and the skink, and the chameleon.
31These are the ones that are unclean for you among all the swarming creatures. Anyone who touches them when they are dead will be unclean until evening.
32And anything upon which one of them falls when it is dead will be unclean—any article of wood, or garment, or hide, or sackcloth, any article with which work is done—it must be put into water, and it will be unclean until evening; then it will be clean.
33And any earthenware vessel into which one of them falls—everything in it will be unclean, and you must break it.
34Any food that may be eaten, upon which such water comes, will be unclean, and any liquid that may be drunk, in any such vessel, will be unclean.
35And anything on which any part of their carcass falls will be unclean; an oven or a stove is to be torn down—they are unclean, and they will remain unclean for you.
36However, a spring or a cistern, a gathering of water, will be clean, but whatever touches their carcass will be unclean.
37And if any part of their carcass falls on any sowing seed that is to be sown, it is clean.
38But if water has been put on seed, and part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.
39And if any of the animals that are yours for food dies, whoever touches its carcass will be unclean until evening.
40And whoever eats of its carcass must wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; and whoever carries its carcass must wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.
41Every swarming creature that swarms on the ground is a detestable thing; it must not be eaten.
42Anything that crawls on its belly, and anything that walks on all fours, up to whatever has many feet, among all the swarming creatures that swarm on the ground—you must not eat them, for they are detestable.
43Do not make yourselves detestable through any swarming creature that swarms, and do not defile yourselves with them, and become unclean through them.
44For I am Yahweh your God; so you shall consecrate yourselves and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not defile yourselves with any swarming creature that moves about on the ground.
45For I am Yahweh, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God; so you shall be holy, for I am holy.
46This is the law of the animal, and the bird, and every living creature that moves through the waters, and every creature that swarms on the ground,
47to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the living creature that may be eaten and the living creature that may not be eaten.
