1An oracle concerning Tyre. Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for it is devastated, without house, without entry; from the land of Cyprus it was revealed to them.
2Be silent, O inhabitants of the coastland, merchant of Sidon; those who cross the sea have filled you.
3On many waters was the grain of Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, her revenue; and she was the merchandise of the nations.
4Be ashamed, O Sidon, for the sea has spoken, the fortress of the sea, saying: ‘I have not been in labor, nor given birth; I have not brought up young men, nor reared virgins.’
5When the report reaches Egypt, they will writhe as at the report of Tyre.
6Cross over to Tarshish; wail, O inhabitants of the coastland!
7Is this your exultant city, whose origin is from days of old, whose feet carried her to sojourn far away?
8Who has planned this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, whose merchants were princes, whose traders were the honored of the earth?
9Yahweh of hosts has planned it, to defile the pride of all glory, to bring low all the honored of the earth.
10Cross over your land like the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish; there is no more restraint.
11He has stretched out his hand over the sea, he has made kingdoms tremble; Yahweh has commanded concerning Canaan to destroy her strongholds.
12And he said: ‘You shall no longer exult, O oppressed one, virgin daughter of Sidon. Rise, cross over to Cyprus; even there you will find no rest.’
13Behold, the land of the Chaldeans — this is the people that was not; Assyria founded it for wild creatures. They set up their siege-towers, they stripped bare its palaces, they made it a ruin.
14Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold is devastated.
15And it will happen in that day that Tyre will be forgotten seventy years, like the days of a single king. At the end of seventy years it will be for Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:
16‘Take a harp, go about the city, O forgotten prostitute; play skillfully, sing many songs, that you may be remembered.’
17And it will happen at the end of seventy years that Yahweh will visit Tyre, and she will return to her hire, and she will prostitute herself with all the kingdoms of the earth upon the face of the ground.
18But her merchandise and her hire will be holy to Yahweh; it will not be stored up nor hoarded, for her merchandise will be for those who dwell before Yahweh, to eat their fill and for fine clothing.
