A Prophecy of Tyre's Ruin

In the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me, saying:

Son of man, because Tyre has said against Jerusalem, ‘Aha! The gate of the peoples is broken; it has swung open to me; I shall be filled, now that she is laid waste’—

therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: Behold, I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring up against you many nations, as the sea brings up its waves.

They shall destroy the walls of Tyre and demolish her towers; I will scrape away her dust from her and make her a bare rock.

She shall become a place for spreading nets in the midst of the sea, for I have spoken, declares the Lord Yahweh; and she shall become plunder for the nations.

And her daughters who are in the field shall be slain by the sword. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.

For thus says the Lord Yahweh: Behold, I am bringing against Tyre Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, from the north, king of kings, with horse and chariot, with horsemen and an assembly, a great host.

Your daughters in the field he will slay with the sword; he will set up a siege wall against you, throw up a ramp against you, and raise a shield against you.

He will direct the blow of his battering ram against your walls, and with his weapons he will break down your towers.

From the abundance of his horses their dust will cover you; from the noise of horseman and wheel and chariot your walls will shake, when he enters your gates as one enters a city that has been breached.

With the hooves of his horses he will trample all your streets; your people he will slay with the sword, and your mighty pillars will go down to the ground.

They will plunder your wealth and loot your merchandise; they will tear down your walls and demolish your fine houses, and they will cast your stones, your timber, and your dust into the midst of the water.

I will silence the noise of your songs, and the sound of your lyres will be heard no more.

I will make you a bare rock; you shall be a place for spreading nets, and you shall never be rebuilt, for I, Yahweh, have spoken, declares the Lord Yahweh.

The Coastlands Lament Tyre's Fall

Thus says the Lord Yahweh to Tyre: Will not the coastlands quake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan, when slaughter is slain in your midst?

Then all the princes of the sea will come down from their thrones; they will remove their robes and strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; they will sit on the ground and tremble every moment and be appalled at you.

They will raise a lament over you and say to you: ‘How you have perished, you who were inhabited from the seas, the celebrated city, that was mighty on the sea, she and her inhabitants, who spread their terror over all who dwelt there!’

Now the coastlands tremble on the day of your fall; the coastlands that are in the sea are dismayed at your passing.

For thus says the Lord Yahweh: When I make you a ruined city, like the cities that are not inhabited, when I bring up the deep over you and the mighty waters cover you,

then I will bring you down with those who go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you dwell in the netherworld, among ruins from of old, with those who go down to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited; and I will set beauty in the land of the living.

I will make you a horror, and you shall be no more; you shall be sought, but you shall never again be found, declares the Lord Yahweh.
