Deuteronomy, meaning “second law,” is a series of powerful farewell sermons from Moses to Israel on the brink of entering the Promised Land. Moses looks back, recounting God’s faithfulness during their forty years in the wilderness, and looks forward, passionately restating God's law for the new generation. At its heart is the Shema (6:4-5), the call to love the one true God with all one's being. The book functions as a national constitution, establishing the terms of the covenant and setting before the people a clear choice: obedience leads to life and blessing in the land, while disobedience leads to curses and exile. It is a final, urgent plea for covenant loyalty from a leader to his people.
