Psalms 39

The AIT Bible

0For the director, for Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

The Fleeting Nature of Life

1I said, “I will guard my ways from sinning with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked is before me.”

2I was mute, in silence; I kept still, even from good, and my pain was stirred up.

3My heart grew hot within me; in my musing a fire burned; I spoke with my tongue:

4“Make me know, Yahweh, my end, and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am.

5Behold, you have made my days mere handbreadths, and my lifespan is as nothing before you. Surely every human, though standing firm, is only a breath. Selah.

6Surely a man walks about as a mere shadow; surely they bustle for a breath; he heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather it.

My Hope Is in You

7And now, for what do I wait, Lord? My hope is in you.

8From all my transgressions deliver me; do not make me the reproach of the fool.

9I am mute, I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have acted.

10Remove your affliction from me; from the blow of your hand I am consumed.

11With rebukes for iniquity you discipline a man, and you dissolve like a moth what he treasures. Surely every human is a breath. Selah.

12Hear my prayer, Yahweh, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am a sojourner with you, a resident alien like all my fathers.

13Look away from me, that I may smile again, before I go and am no more.
