A Prayer to the Judge of the Earth

1O God of vengeance, Yahweh; O God of vengeance, shine forth!

2Rise up, O Judge of the earth; render recompense to the proud.

3How long shall the wicked, O Yahweh, how long shall the wicked exult?

4They pour out, they speak arrogance; all the workers of iniquity boast of themselves.

5Your people, O Yahweh, they crush, and your inheritance they afflict.

6The widow and the sojourner they kill, and the fatherless they murder.

7And they say, “Yah does not see, and the God of Jacob does not perceive.”

8Understand, you brutish among the people; and you fools, when will you be wise?

9The one who plants the ear, does he not hear? Or the one who forms the eye, does he not see?

10The one who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke — he who teaches man knowledge?

11Yahweh knows the thoughts of man, that they are a breath.

12Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O Yah, and from your law you teach him,

13to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked.

14For Yahweh will not abandon his people, and his inheritance he will not forsake.

15For judgment will return to righteousness, and after it all the upright of heart.

16Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? Who will take a stand for me against the workers of iniquity?

17Had Yahweh not been my help, my soul would soon have dwelt in silence.

18When I said, “My foot has slipped,” your loyal love, O Yahweh, held me up.

19In the multitude of my anxious thoughts within me, your consolations delight my soul.

20Can a throne of destruction be allied with you — one that fashions trouble by decree?

21They band together against the life of the righteous, and innocent blood they condemn to death.

22But Yahweh has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge.

23And he will bring back upon them their own iniquity, and in their evil he will destroy them; Yahweh our God will destroy them.
