For the director. Of the servant of Yahweh, of David, who spoke to Yahweh the words of this song on the day Yahweh delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
And he said: I love you, Yahweh, my strength.
Yahweh is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my crag in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call upon Yahweh, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.
The cords of death encompassed me, and the torrents of destruction terrified me.
The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called upon Yahweh, and to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry before him came into his ears.
Then the earth quaked and shook, and the foundations of the mountains trembled; they quaked because he was angry.
Smoke went up from his nostrils, and fire from his mouth devoured; coals blazed from him.
He bent the heavens and came down, and thick darkness was beneath his feet.
He rode upon a cherub and flew; he soared upon the wings of the wind.
He made darkness his hiding place, his canopy around him — darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
Out of the brightness before him his clouds passed — hail and coals of fire.
And Yahweh thundered in the heavens, and the Most High gave forth his voice — hail and coals of fire.
He sent out his arrows and scattered them, and he shot forth lightning bolts and routed them.
Then the channels of water were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, Yahweh, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
He reached down from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters.
He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but Yahweh became a support for me.
He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.
Yahweh dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he repaid me.
For I have kept the ways of Yahweh, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For all his judgments are before me, and his statutes I have not put away from me.
I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my iniquity.
So Yahweh repaid me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands before his eyes.
With the loyal you show yourself loyal; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless.
With the pure you show yourself pure, and with the crooked you show yourself twisted.
For you save an afflicted people, but haughty eyes you bring low.
For you light my lamp; Yahweh my God brightens my darkness.
For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall.
As for God—his way is perfect; the word of Yahweh is refined; he is a shield to all who take refuge in him.
For who is God apart from Yahweh? And who is a rock except our God?
The God who girds me with strength and makes my way perfect.
who makes my feet like the deer’s, and sets me firm upon my heights.
who trains my hands for battle, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supports me, and your humility makes me great.
You widen my stride beneath me, and my ankles do not give way.
I pursue my enemies and overtake them, and I do not turn back until they are finished.
I shatter them so they cannot rise; they fall beneath my feet.
You gird me with strength for battle; you make those who rise against me sink down beneath me.
You have made my enemies turn their backs to me, and those who hate me—I destroy them.
They cry for help, but there is no savior; to Yahweh, but he does not answer them.
I pulverize them like dust before the wind; like mud in the streets I pour them out.
You deliver me from the strife of the people; you set me as head of the nations; a people I did not know serve me.
At the hearing of the ear they obey me; foreigners cringe before me.
Foreigners lose heart and come trembling out of their strongholds.
Yahweh lives! And blessed be my rock! And exalted be the God of my salvation—
the God who gives me vengeance and subdues peoples under me,
who delivers me from my enemies. Indeed, you lift me high above those who rise against me; from the man of violence you rescue me.
Therefore I will praise you among the nations, Yahweh, and to your name I will sing praises.
He makes great the victories of his king, and shows loyal love to his anointed—to David and to his offspring forever.
