Jonah 2

The AIT Bible

Jonah's Prayer from the Deep

1Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh his God from the belly of the fish,

2and he said: “I called out from my distress to Yahweh, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried for help, and you heard my voice.

3You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current surrounded me; all your breakers and your waves passed over me.

4And I said, ‘I am driven away from before your eyes; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’

5The waters closed in over me, up to the throat; the deep surrounded me; reeds were wrapped around my head.

6To the roots of the mountains I went down; the earth with its bars closed behind me forever. But you brought up my life from the pit, Yahweh my God.

7As my life was fainting away within me, I remembered Yahweh; and my prayer came to you, to your holy temple.

8Those who cling to worthless idols forsake their source of loyal love.

9But I, with a voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to Yahweh!”

Jonah Is Returned to the Land

10Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto the dry land.
