Psalms 69

The AIT Bible

For the director, according to “Lilies.” Of David.

Save Me from the Deep Waters

Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my throat.

I have sunk in deep mire, and there is no foothold; I have come into the depths of the waters, and a flood sweeps over me.

I am worn out with my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail while I wait for my God.

More than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, my enemies who lie against me. What I did not steal, must I then restore?

O God, you know my folly, and my guilty deeds are not hidden from you.

Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord Yahweh of hosts; let not those who seek you be humiliated through me, O God of Israel.

For on your account I have borne reproach; humiliation has covered my face.

I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons.

For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

I wept in fasting with my soul, and it became taunts against me.

When I made sackcloth my garment, I became a byword to them.

Those who sit at the gate talk about me, and I am the song of the drinkers of strong drink.

But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Yahweh, at an acceptable time. O God, in the abundance of your loyal love answer me, in the truth of your salvation.

Rescue me from the mire, and let me not sink; let me be delivered from those who hate me, and from the depths of waters.

Let not the flood of waters sweep over me, nor the deep swallow me, nor the pit close its mouth over me.

Answer me, O Yahweh, for your loyal love is good; according to the abundance of your compassion turn to me.

And do not hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress; hurry, answer me.

Draw near to my soul, redeem it; because of my enemies ransom me.

You yourself know my reproach and my shame and my humiliation; all my adversaries are before you.

Reproach has broken my heart, and I am sick; I hoped for someone to show sympathy, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.

They put poison in my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Let Their Table Become a Snare

Let their table before them become a snare, and to those at ease, a trap.

Let their eyes grow dark so they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually.

Pour out your indignation on them, and let your burning anger overtake them.

Let their encampment become desolate; let there be no dweller in their tents.

For they pursue the one you yourself have struck, and they recount the pain of those you have wounded.

Add iniquity to their iniquity, and let them not enter into your righteousness.

Let them be blotted out from the book of life, and not be enrolled with the righteous.

I Will Praise the Name of God

But as for me, I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high.

I will praise the name of God with a song, and I will magnify him with thanksgiving.

And it will please Yahweh more than an ox, than a bull with horns and hooves.

The humble have seen it and rejoice; you who seek God, may your heart revive!

For Yahweh listens to the needy, and he does not despise his prisoners.

Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them.

For God will save Zion and build the cities of Judah; and they will dwell there and possess it.

And the offspring of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell in it.
