1And immediately in the morning, the chief priests—with the elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin—held a consultation. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
2And Pilate questioned him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You say so.”
3And the chief priests were accusing him of many things.
4But Pilate questioned him again, saying, “Do you answer nothing? See how many charges they bring against you.”
5But Jesus no longer answered anything, so that Pilate was amazed.
6Now at the feast, he would release for them one prisoner, whomever they requested.
7Now there was one called Barabbas, who was bound with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection.
8And the crowd came up and began to ask him to do as he usually did for them.
9But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”
10For he knew that it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed him over.
11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead.
12But Pilate answered them again, “Then what shall I do with the one you call the King of the Jews?”
13And they cried out again, “Crucify him!”
14But Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify him!”
15So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and having had Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.
16And the soldiers led him away inside the courtyard, which is the Praetorium, and they called together the whole cohort.
17They clothed him in a purple cloak and, weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on him.
18And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
19And they kept striking his head with a reed and spitting on him, and kneeling down, they paid homage to him.
20And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they lead him out to crucify him.
21And they compel a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country—the father of Alexander and Rufus—to carry his cross.
22And they bring him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.
23And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
24And they crucify him and divide his garments, casting a lot for them to decide who should take what.
25It was the third hour when they crucified him.
26And the inscription of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
27And with him they crucify two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.
29And those who passed by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days,
30save yourself by coming down from the cross!”
31Likewise the chief priests with the scribes also mocked him among themselves, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.”
32“Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” And those crucified with him were reviling him.
33And when the sixth hour came, darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”—which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
35And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “Look, he is calling Elijah.”
36And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered him a drink, saying, “Leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.”
37But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last.
38And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
39And when the centurion, who was standing there facing him, saw how he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God.”
40There were also women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
41These had followed him and served him when he was in Galilee, and there were many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
42And when evening had already come, since it was the day of Preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath),
43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the council, who was himself also waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
44Pilate was surprised that he was already dead, and summoning the centurion, he asked him if he had been dead for long.
45And when he learned from the centurion that it was so, he granted the corpse to Joseph.
46And after buying a linen shroud, he took him down, wrapped him in the shroud, and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
47And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he had been laid.
