1So then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged.
2And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and placed it on his head, and they clothed him in a purple robe,
3and they kept coming up to him and saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and they were striking him.
4Pilate came out again and says to them, “Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no grounds for a charge in him.”
5So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate says to them, “Behold, the man!”
6So when the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate says to them, “You take him and crucify him, for I find no grounds for a charge in him.”
7The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”
8So when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid,
9and he entered the praetorium again and says to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.
10So Pilate says to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?”
11Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given to you from above. For this reason the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”
12From then on Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”
13So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called the Stone Pavement, which in Hebrew is Gabbatha.
14Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he says to the Jews, “Behold, your King!”
15So they cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate says to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
16So then he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus.
17And carrying the cross himself, he went out to what is called the Place of a Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha,
18where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.
19Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. And it was written: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
21So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’”
22Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23So when the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was seamless, woven from the top in one piece.
24So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it will be”—so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So this is what the soldiers did.
25Now standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26So when Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he says to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.”
27Then he says to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
28After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, says, “I thirst.”
29A jar full of sour wine was sitting there, so they filled a sponge with the sour wine, put it on a hyssop stalk, and brought it to his mouth.
30When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31Therefore, since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews asked Pilate to have their legs broken and their bodies taken away, so that they would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath—for that Sabbath was a high day.
32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who was crucified with him.
33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
34But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.
35And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. And that one knows that he tells the truth, so that you also may believe.
36For these things happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: ‘Not a bone of his will be broken.’
37And again another Scripture says, ‘They will look on him whom they pierced.’
38After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave permission. So he came and took his body.
39Nicodemus also came—the one who had first come to Jesus by night—bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds in weight.
40So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever yet been laid.
42So there, because of the Jewish day of Preparation and because the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus.
