Psalms 40

The AIT Bible

For the choirmaster. Of David. A psalm.

A New Song of Deliverance

I waited eagerly for Yahweh, and he inclined to me and heard my cry.

He brought me up from the pit of destruction, from the miry clay, and he set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

And he put a new song in my mouth, a praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and they will trust in Yahweh.

Blessed is the man who makes Yahweh his trust and does not turn to the proud, nor to those who stray after falsehood.

Many are the wonders you have done, you, Yahweh my God, and your thoughts toward us; none can be compared to you. Were I to declare and speak them, they are more than can be counted.

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—ears you have dug open for me—burnt offering and purification offering you did not require.

Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written concerning me.

To do your will, my God, is my delight, and your law is within my inmost being.”

I have proclaimed righteousness in the great assembly; behold, I do not restrain my lips—Yahweh, you know.

I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your loyal love and your truth from the great assembly.

A Prayer for Help

You, Yahweh, will not withhold your compassions from me; your loyal love and your truth will continually preserve me.

For evils beyond number have encircled me; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I am unable to see; they are more numerous than the hairs of my head, and my heart has failed me.

Be pleased, Yahweh, to deliver me; Yahweh, hasten to my help.

Let them be ashamed and disgraced together, those who seek my life to sweep it away; let them be turned back and humiliated, those who delight in my trouble.

Let them be appalled because of their shame, those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”

Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; let those who love your salvation say continually, “Yahweh be magnified!”

But I am poor and needy; may the Lord take thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; my God, do not delay.
