1And the word of Yahweh came to Jonah a second time, saying:
2“Get up, go to Nineveh, the great city, and call out to it the proclamation that I am about to speak to you.”
3So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, according to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days’ walk across.
4Jonah began to go into the city, a walk of one day, and he called out and said, “Forty more days, and Nineveh will be overthrown!”
5And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.
6When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.
7And he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither human nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not graze, and let them not drink water.
8But let human and animal be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out to God with strength; and let each turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in their hands.
9Who knows? God may turn and relent, and turn back from his burning anger, so that we do not perish.”
10When God saw their deeds — that they turned from their evil way — God relented concerning the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.
