Psalms 38

The AIT Bible

A psalm of David, for a memorial offering.

A Lament in Sickness and Sin

Yahweh, do not rebuke me in your wrath, nor discipline me in your hot anger.

For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down upon me.

There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no peace in my bones because of my sin.

For my iniquities have passed over my head; like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

My wounds stink and fester because of my folly.

I am bent down, I am bowed very low; all the day I go about mourning.

For my loins are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.

I am numb and utterly crushed; I groan from the anguish of my heart.

Lord, all my longing is before you, and my sighing is not hidden from you.

My heart throbs, my strength has failed me, and even the light of my eyes—it too is gone from me.

My loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my affliction, and my kinsmen stand far off.

Those who seek my life lay snares; those who seek my harm speak of ruin, and all the day they mutter deceits.

Silent Hope in God

But I, like a deaf man, do not hear; and like a mute, who does not open his mouth.

I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth there are no rebuttals.

For in you, Yahweh, I have hoped; you will answer, Lord my God.

For I said, ‘Lest they rejoice over me; when my foot slips, they magnify themselves against me.’

For I am ready to stumble, and my pain is ever before me.

For I confess my iniquity; I am anxious because of my sin.

But my enemies are vigorous and strong, and many are those who hate me falsely.

Those who repay evil for good are hostile to me, because I pursue good.

Do not forsake me, Yahweh; my God, do not be far from me.

Hurry to my help, Lord, my salvation.
