Psalms 89

The AIT Bible

A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.

A Song of God's Faithfulness

Of the loyal love of Yahweh I will sing forever; to generation after generation I will make known your faithfulness with my mouth.

For I said, “Loyal love will be built up forever; in the heavens you establish your faithfulness.”

“I have cut a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant:

‘I will establish your seed forever, and I will build up your throne for generation after generation.’” Selah.

Praise to the Mighty Creator

And the heavens praise your wonder, O Yahweh, indeed your faithfulness, in the assembly of the holy ones.

For who in the skies can compare to Yahweh, who is like Yahweh among the sons of God?

A God dreaded in the great council of the holy ones, and feared above all who surround him.

O Yahweh, God of hosts, who is mighty like you, O Yah? And your faithfulness surrounds you.

You rule over the surging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them.

You crushed Rahab like one slain; with your mighty arm you scattered your enemies.

Yours are the heavens; yours also is the earth; the world and its fullness—you founded them.

North and south—you created them; Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at your name.

Yours is an arm with might; strong is your hand, exalted your right hand.

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; loyal love and truth go before your face.

Blessed is the people who know the festal shout; O Yahweh, in the light of your face they walk.

In your name they rejoice all the day, and in your righteousness they are exalted.

For you are the splendor of their strength, and by your favor you exalt our horn.

For to Yahweh belongs our shield, and to the Holy One of Israel our king.

God's Covenant with David

Then you spoke in a vision to your faithful ones and said: “I have granted help to a warrior; I have exalted a chosen one from the people.

I have found David my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him.

With whom my hand will be established; my arm also will strengthen him.

No enemy will exact tribute from him, nor will a son of wickedness afflict him.

And I will crush his foes before his face, and those who hate him I will strike down.

And my faithfulness and my loyal love will be with him, and in my name his horn will be exalted.

And I will set his hand on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers.

He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.’

I also will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.

Forever I will keep for him my loyal love, and my covenant stands faithful to him.

And I will establish his seed forever, and his throne like the days of the heavens.

If his sons forsake my law and do not walk in my judgments,

if they profane my statutes and do not keep my commandments,

then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with plagues,

but my loyal love I will not break off from him, nor will I be false to my faithfulness.

I will not profane my covenant, nor alter what has gone out from my lips.

Once for all I have sworn by my holiness: I will not lie to David.

His seed will endure forever, and his throne like the sun before me.

Like the moon it will be established forever, a faithful witness in the sky. Selah.

A Lament for the Rejected King

But you—you have cast off and rejected; you have been furious with your anointed.

You have spurned the covenant of your servant; you have profaned his crown to the ground.

You have broken through all his walls; you have made his fortresses a ruin.

All who pass along the way plundered him; he has become a reproach to his neighbors.

You have raised the right hand of his adversaries; you have made all his enemies rejoice.

You even turn back the edge of his sword, and you have not upheld him in the battle.

You have brought his splendor to an end and hurled his throne to the ground.

You have shortened the days of his youth; you have covered him with shame. Selah.

How Long, O Yahweh?

How long, O Yahweh? Will you hide yourself forever? Will your wrath burn like fire?

Remember how fleeting I am—for what vanity you have created all the sons of man!

What man can live and not see death, can rescue his life from the hand of Sheol? Selah.

Where are your former acts of loyal love, O Lord, which you swore to David in your faithfulness?

Remember, O Lord, the reproach of your servants—how I bear in my bosom all the many peoples,

with which your enemies have reproached, O Yahweh, with which they have reproached the footsteps of your anointed.
