1An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
2A jealous and avenging God is Yahweh; Yahweh is avenging and full of wrath. Yahweh takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he keeps wrath for his enemies.
3Yahweh is slow to anger and great in power, yet he will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. Yahweh’s way is in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
4He rebukes the sea and dries it up, and he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither, and the bloom of Lebanon withers.
5The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt away; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it.
6Before his indignation who can stand? And who can rise up amid the burning of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are torn down by him.
7Yahweh is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knows those who take refuge in him.
8But with an overflowing flood he will bring an end to her place, and he will pursue his enemies into darkness.
9What do you plot against Yahweh? He himself will make a full end; trouble will not rise up a second time.
10For though they are entangled like thorns and drunken as with their drink, they will be consumed like fully dry stubble.
11From you one has gone out who plots evil against Yahweh, a counselor of worthlessness.
12Thus says Yahweh: Though they are at full strength and so many, even so they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more.
13And now I will break his yoke from off you, and I will tear apart your bonds.
14And Yahweh has given command concerning you: No more of your name shall be sown. From the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the cast idol. I will make your grave, for you are contemptible.
15Look! On the mountains, the feet of one bringing good news, proclaiming peace! Celebrate your festivals, O Judah, fulfill your vows; for the worthless one will never again pass through you—he is utterly cut off.
