Leviticus 8

The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons

Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying:

“Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and the bull of the sin offering, and the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread,

and assemble the whole congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting.”

So Moses did as Yahweh had commanded him, and the congregation was assembled at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

Then Moses said to the congregation, “This is the thing that Yahweh has commanded to be done.”

And Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water.

He put the tunic on him, girded him with the sash, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him; he girded him with the woven band of the ephod and bound it to him with it.

He set the breastpiece on him, and in the breastpiece he put the Urim and the Thummim.

He set the turban on his head, and on the turban, at the front of his face, he set the golden plate, the holy diadem, as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it, and consecrated them.

He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, to consecrate them.

He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him.

Then Moses brought Aaron’s sons forward and clothed them with tunics, girded them with sashes, and bound headdresses on them, as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

He brought forward the bull of the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull of the sin offering.

Moses slaughtered it, took the blood, and with his finger put it on the horns of the altar all around, purifying the altar; and the rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar and consecrated it, to make atonement for it.

He took all the fat that was on the entrails, the lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys with their fat, and Moses turned them into smoke on the altar.

But the bull, its hide, its flesh, and its dung he burned with fire outside the camp, as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

Then he brought forward the ram of the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram.

Moses slaughtered it and dashed the blood against the altar all around.

He cut the ram into its pieces, and Moses turned the head, the pieces, and the suet into smoke.

He washed the entrails and the legs with water, and Moses turned the whole ram into smoke on the altar. It was a burnt offering for a pleasing aroma, a fire offering to Yahweh, as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

Then he brought forward the second ram, the ram of ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram.

Moses slaughtered it, took some of its blood, and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.

He brought Aaron’s sons forward, and Moses put some of the blood on the lobe of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet; then Moses dashed the blood against the altar all around.

He took the fat—the fat tail, all the fat that was on the entrails, the lobe of the liver, the two kidneys with their fat—and the right thigh.

And out of the basket of unleavened bread that was before Yahweh he took one unleavened cake, one cake of bread with oil, and one wafer, and placed them on the fat portions and on the right thigh.

He put all these on the palms of Aaron and on the palms of his sons, and waved them as a wave offering before Yahweh.

Then Moses took them from their palms and turned them into smoke on the altar with the burnt offering. They were an ordination offering for a pleasing aroma, a fire offering to Yahweh.

Moses took the breast and waved it as a wave offering before Yahweh; from the ram of ordination it was Moses’ portion, as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

Then Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar, and sprinkled it on Aaron and on his garments, and on his sons and on his sons’ garments with him. So he consecrated Aaron and his garments, and his sons and his sons’ garments with him.

And Moses said to Aaron and to his sons, “Boil the flesh at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and there you shall eat it, along with the bread that is in the basket of the ordination offering, as I commanded, saying, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it.’

And what remains of the flesh and of the bread you shall burn with fire.

And you shall not go out from the entrance of the tent of meeting for seven days, until the day when the days of your ordination are completed, for it will take seven days to ordain you.

As was done on this day, Yahweh commanded to do, to make atonement for you.

And at the entrance of the tent of meeting you shall stay day and night for seven days, and you shall keep the charge of Yahweh, so that you do not die; for so I was commanded.

And Aaron and his sons did all the things that Yahweh commanded by the hand of Moses.
