Leviticus 4

The Sin Offering

Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

“Speak to the sons of Israel, saying: When a person sins unintentionally against any of the commandments of Yahweh that ought not to be done, and does any one of them—

if it is the anointed priest who sins, bringing guilt upon the people, then he shall present for his sin that he committed a young bull of the herd, without blemish, to Yahweh as a sin offering.

He shall bring the bull to the entrance of the tent of meeting before Yahweh, and he shall lay his hand on the head of the bull and slaughter the bull before Yahweh.

Then the anointed priest shall take some of the blood of the bull and bring it into the tent of meeting.

And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before Yahweh, in front of the veil of the sanctuary.

The priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense that is before Yahweh, in the tent of meeting; and all the rest of the blood of the bull he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering, which is at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

And all the fat of the bull of the sin offering he shall lift out from it: the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails,

and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, which is by the loins, and the lobe on the liver, which he shall remove along with the kidneys—

just as it is lifted out from the ox of the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall turn them into smoke on the altar of burnt offering.

But the hide of the bull and all its flesh, along with its head and its legs, and its entrails and its dung—

the whole bull he shall carry out to a clean place outside the camp, to where the fatty ashes are poured out, and burn it on wood with fire; where the fatty ashes are poured out it shall be burned.

If the whole congregation of Israel strays and the matter is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they do any one of the commandments of Yahweh that ought not to be done, and they become guilty—

when the sin they committed against it becomes known, then the assembly shall present a young bull of the herd as a sin offering and bring it before the tent of meeting.

The elders of the congregation shall lay their hands on the head of the bull before Yahweh, and he shall slaughter the bull before Yahweh.

Then the anointed priest shall bring some of the blood of the bull into the tent of meeting,

and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before Yahweh, in front of the veil.

He shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar that is before Yahweh, in the tent of meeting; and all the rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering, which is at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

And all its fat he shall lift out from it and turn into smoke on the altar.

He shall do with the bull just as he did with the bull of the sin offering; so he shall do with it. Thus the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven.

Then he shall carry the bull outside the camp and burn it as he burned the first bull; it is the sin offering of the assembly.

When a leader sins and does one of any of the things that the commandments of Yahweh his God forbid to be done, unintentionally, and becomes guilty—

or if his sin that he committed is made known to him, then he shall bring as his offering a male goat, without blemish.

He shall lay his hand on the head of the goat and slaughter it in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered before Yahweh; it is a sin offering.

The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering.

And all its fat he shall turn into smoke on the altar, like the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings. Thus the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin, and he shall be forgiven.

If any one person of the people of the land sins unintentionally, by doing any one of the commandments of Yahweh that ought not to be done, and becomes guilty—

or if his sin that he committed is made known to him, then he shall bring as his offering a female goat, without blemish, for his sin that he committed.

He shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter the sin offering in the place of the burnt offering.

The priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and all the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar.

And he shall remove all its fat, just as the fat is removed from the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest shall turn it into smoke on the altar as a soothing aroma to Yahweh. So the priest shall make atonement for him, and he will be forgiven.

But if he brings a lamb as his offering for a sin offering, he shall bring a female without blemish.

And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it as a sin offering in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered.

And the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and all its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar.

And he shall remove all its fat, just as the fat of the lamb is removed from the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest shall turn them into smoke on the altar, upon the fire offerings of Yahweh. So the priest shall make atonement for him, for his sin that he has committed, and he will be forgiven.
