1For this reason we must pay all the more attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.
2For if the message spoken through angels proved reliable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty,
3how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? It was first declared through the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard him,
4while God bore witness alongside them by signs and wonders and various miracles, and by distributions of the Holy Spirit according to his will.
5For it was not to angels that he subjected the coming world, about which we are speaking.
6But someone has testified somewhere, saying: “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him?
7You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor,
8you subjected all things under his feet.” For in subjecting all things to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him.
9But we do see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
10For it was fitting that he — for whom and through whom all things exist — in bringing many sons to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
11For both the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all of one; for this reason he is not ashamed to call them brothers,
12saying: “I will proclaim your name to my brothers; in the midst of the assembly I will sing your praise.”
13And again: “I will put my trust in him.” And again: “Here I am, and the children God has given me.”
14Since, then, the children share in blood and flesh, he too likewise partook of the same, so that through death he might render powerless the one who holds the power of death — that is, the devil —
15and might set free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.
16For surely it is not angels he helps, but the offspring of Abraham he helps.
17Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every way, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters relating to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.
18For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
