Amos delivers one of the Bible's most searing indictments of social injustice. A rugged shepherd from Judah, he is sent by God to the prosperous but corrupt northern kingdom of Israel. He begins by pronouncing judgment on the surrounding nations for their cruelty, but his prophetic lens soon focuses squarely on Israel, whose sins are even greater because of their covenant relationship with God. Amos condemns the wealthy who oppress the poor, the judges who accept bribes, and the worshippers whose lavish festivals are an offense to God because their lives lack justice and righteousness. Through a series of terrifying visions—locusts, fire, a plumb line—he declares that God's judgment is inescapable. Yet, the book closes with a surprising and powerful promise of restoration, when God will rebuild David's fallen house and bless his people once more.
