1Woe to those at ease in Zion, and to those who feel secure on Mount Samaria, the notable men of the foremost of the nations, to whom the house of Israel comes!
2Cross over to Calneh and see; go from there to Great Hamath; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory?
3You who push away the day of evil, yet bring near the seat of violence—
4who lie on beds of ivory and lounge on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall;
5who improvise to the sound of the harp; like David they invent for themselves instruments of song;
6who drink wine by the bowlful and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph.
7Therefore now they shall go into exile at the head of the exiles, and the revelry of those who lounge shall pass away.
8The Lord Yahweh has sworn by himself—declaration of Yahweh, God of hosts—“I abhor the pride of Jacob, and I hate his citadels; so I will hand over the city and all that fills it.”
9And it shall be, if ten men are left in one house, they shall die.
10And when a man’s relative, the one who burns him, lifts him up to carry the bones out of the house, and he says to whoever is in the innermost part of the house, “Is there anyone still with you?” and he says, “None,” then he will say, “Hush! For the name of Yahweh must not be invoked.”
11For behold, Yahweh is commanding, and he will strike the great house into fragments and the small house into bits.
12Do horses run on the crag? Does one plow the sea with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood.
13you who rejoice over Lo-Debar, who say, “Have we not by our own strength taken Karnaim for ourselves?”
14For behold, I am raising up against you, house of Israel—declaration of Yahweh, God of hosts—a nation, and they will oppress you from Lebo-Hamath to the Wadi of the Arabah.
