1Now day by day, Tobit was calculating the days: how many it would take to travel and how many to return. And when the days were completed and his son was not there,
2he said, “Could he have been detained there? Or has Gabael perhaps died, and no one is giving him the silver?”
3And he began to grieve.
4And Anna his wife said, “My child has perished! He is no longer among the living.” And she began to weep and mourn for her son, and said,
5“Woe to me, my child, that I let you go—the light of my eyes!”
6And Tobit would say to her, “Hush, do not worry, sister. He is safe. Something has surely delayed them there, and the man who went with him is trustworthy—one of our kinsmen. Do not grieve for him, sister; he will be here soon.”
7But she said to him, “Be quiet! Do not deceive me! My child has perished.” And every day she would jump up and scan the road by which her son had left, and she would not be persuaded by anyone. When the sun set, she would come inside and mourn and weep the whole night long, and got no sleep. Now when the fourteen days of the wedding feast that Raguel had sworn to hold for his daughter were completed, Tobias went to him and said, “Send me off, for I know that my father and mother do not believe they will ever see me again. So now I ask you, father, to send me off, so that I may go to my father. I have already told you the state in which I left him.”
8And Raguel said to Tobias, “Stay, child, stay with me. I will send messengers to your father Tobit, and they will inform him about you.”
9But Tobias said to him, “No, I beg you, send me from here to my father.”
10So Raguel got up and gave Tobias his wife Sarah and half of all his possessions: male and female servants, cattle and sheep, donkeys and camels, clothing, silver, and goods.
11And he sent them off in good health. He embraced Tobias and said to him, “Farewell, child, go in good health. May the Lord of heaven grant success to you and your wife Sarah, and may I see your children before I die.”
12And he said to his daughter Sarah, “Go to your father-in-law, for from now on they are your parents, just as the ones who gave you birth. Go in peace, daughter; may I hear a good report about you as long as I live.” And after bidding them farewell, he let them go. Then Edna said to Tobias, “Child and beloved brother, may the Lord bring you safely home, and may I see your children from you and my daughter Sarah before I die. Before the Lord, I entrust my daughter to your care. Do not cause her grief all the days of your life. Go in peace, child. From now on I am your mother, and Sarah is your sister. May we all prosper together all the days of our lives.” And she kissed them both and sent them off in good health.
13So Tobias departed from Raguel, healthy and rejoicing, blessing the Lord of heaven and earth, the King of all, because he had made his journey successful. And Raguel had said to him, “May you be granted success in honoring them all the days of their lives.”
