1Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than one perverse in his lips, and he a fool.
2Also, desire without knowledge is not good, and one who hastens with the feet misses the way.
3A man’s folly subverts his way, yet against Yahweh his heart rages.
4Wealth adds many friends, but the poor man is parted from his friend.
5A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who breathes out lies will not escape.
6Many entreat the face of a noble, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.
7All the brothers of a poor man hate him; how much more do his friends keep far from him! He pursues after words—but they are not there.
8One who acquires heart loves his own self; one who guards understanding will find good.
9A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who breathes out lies will perish.
10Luxury is not fitting for a fool—how much less for a slave to rule over princes!
11A man’s insight makes him slow to anger, and it is his glory to pass over an offense.
12A king’s rage is like the roaring of a young lion, but his favor is like dew upon the grass.
13A foolish son is disaster to his father, and a wife’s quarrels are a continual dripping.
14House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from Yahweh.
15Laziness makes deep sleep fall, and an idle person will go hungry.
16One who keeps the commandment keeps his own self; one who despises his ways will die.
17One who is gracious to the poor lends to Yahweh, and he will repay him his due.
18Discipline your son while there is hope, but do not set your desire on putting him to death.
19A man of great wrath must bear the penalty; for if you rescue him, you will only have to do it again.
20Listen to counsel and receive discipline, so that you may become wise in your latter end.
21Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but the counsel of Yahweh—it will stand.
22What is desirable in a man is his loyal love, and better is a poor man than a liar.
23The fear of Yahweh leads to life; one rests satisfied, untouched by evil.
24The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he will not even bring it back to his mouth.
25Strike a scoffer and the simple will become shrewd; reprove one who has understanding, and he will discern knowledge.
26One who assaults his father and drives away his mother is a son who brings shame and disgrace.
27Cease, my son, to listen to discipline only to stray from words of knowledge.
28A worthless witness mocks justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down iniquity.
29Judgments are prepared for scoffers, and beatings for the back of fools.
