Leviticus 13

Diagnosing Skin Diseases

And Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying:

When a person has on the skin of his flesh a swelling or a scab or a bright spot, and it becomes on the skin of his flesh an infection of skin-disease, he shall be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons the priests.

And the priest shall examine the infection on the skin of the flesh; and if the hair in the infection has turned white and the appearance of the infection is deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is an infection of skin-disease. When the priest has examined him, he shall declare him unclean.

But if it is a white bright spot on the skin of his flesh, and its appearance is not deeper than the skin, and its hair has not turned white, then the priest shall quarantine the infection for seven days.

And the priest shall examine him on the seventh day, and behold, if the infection has stayed as it was in his eyes and the infection has not spread on the skin, then the priest shall shut him up seven days a second time.

And the priest shall examine him on the seventh day a second time, and behold, if the infection has faded and the infection has not spread on the skin, then the priest shall declare him clean; it is a scab. He shall wash his clothes and be clean.

But if the scab spreads further on the skin after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he shall show himself again to the priest.

And the priest shall examine, and behold, the scab has spread on the skin; then the priest shall declare him unclean; it is skin-disease.

When an infection of skin-disease is on a person, he shall be brought to the priest.

And the priest shall examine, and behold, if there is a white swelling on the skin and it has turned the hair white and there is raw living flesh in the swelling,

it is a chronic skin-disease on the skin of his flesh, and the priest shall declare him unclean. He shall not shut him up, for he is unclean.

But if the skin-disease breaks out extensively on the skin, and the skin-disease covers all the skin affected by the infection from his head to his feet, everywhere the priest can see,

then the priest shall examine, and behold, if the skin-disease has covered all his flesh, he shall declare the infection clean; it has all turned white — he is clean.

But on the day raw living flesh appears in it, he shall be unclean.

And the priest shall examine the living flesh and declare him unclean; the living flesh is unclean — it is skin-disease.

Or if the living flesh turns back and is changed to white, he shall come to the priest,

and the priest shall examine him, and behold, if the infection has turned to white, then the priest shall declare the infection clean — he is clean.

When flesh has on its skin a boil, and it has healed,

and in the place of the boil there is a white swelling or a reddish-white bright spot, it shall be shown to the priest.

And the priest shall examine, and behold, if its appearance is lower than the skin and its hair has turned white, then the priest shall declare him unclean; it is an infection of skin-disease that has broken out in the boil.

But if the priest examines it, and behold, there is no white hair in it and it is not lower than the skin but is faded, then the priest shall shut him up seven days.

And if it spreads further on the skin, then the priest shall declare him unclean; it is an infection.

But if the bright spot stays in its place and has not spread, it is the scar of the boil, and the priest shall declare him clean.

Or when flesh has on its skin a burn from fire, and the raw flesh of the burn becomes a reddish-white or white bright spot,

then the priest shall examine it, and behold, if the hair has turned white in the bright spot and its appearance is deeper than the skin, it is skin-disease that has broken out in the burn; and the priest shall declare him unclean — it is an infection of skin-disease.

But if the priest examines it, and behold, there is no white hair in the bright spot and it is not lower than the skin but is faded, then the priest shall shut him up seven days.

And the priest shall examine him on the seventh day; if it has spread further on the skin, then the priest shall declare him unclean — it is an infection of skin-disease.

But if the bright spot stays in its place, has not spread on the skin, and is faded, it is the swelling of the burn, and the priest shall declare him clean, for it is the scar of the burn.

When a man or a woman has an infection on the head or in the beard,

then the priest shall examine the infection, and behold, if its appearance is deeper than the skin and there is in it thin yellow hair, then the priest shall declare him unclean; it is a scaly patch, skin-disease of the head or the beard.

But when the priest examines the mark of the scaly patch, and behold, its appearance is not deeper than the skin and there is no black hair in it, then the priest shall isolate the mark of the scaly patch for seven days.

On the seventh day the priest shall examine the mark, and behold, if the scaly patch has not spread and there is no yellow hair in it, and the appearance of the scaly patch is not deeper than the skin,

then he shall shave himself, but the scaly patch he shall not shave; and the priest shall isolate the person with the scaly patch for a second seven days.

On the seventh day the priest shall examine the scaly patch, and behold, if the scaly patch has not spread in the skin and its appearance is not deeper than the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean; and he shall wash his garments and be clean.

But if the scaly patch indeed spreads in the skin after his cleansing,

then the priest shall examine him, and behold, if the scaly patch has spread in the skin, the priest need not search for the yellow hair; he is unclean.

But if in his eyes the scaly patch has remained unchanged and black hair has grown in it, the scaly patch is healed; he is clean, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

And when a man or a woman has bright spots on the skin of their flesh, white bright spots,

then the priest shall examine, and behold, if on the skin of their flesh the bright spots are dull white, it is a harmless rash that has broken out on the skin; he is clean.

And when a man’s head loses its hair, he is bald; he is clean.

And if he loses the hair on the front side of his head, toward his face, he is bald on the forehead; he is clean.

But if on the bald crown or the bald forehead there is a reddish-white mark, it is a scaly disease breaking out on his bald crown or his bald forehead.

Then the priest shall examine him, and behold, if the swelling of the mark is reddish-white on his bald crown or his bald forehead, like the appearance of the scaly disease of the skin of the flesh,

he is a diseased man; he is unclean. The priest must surely pronounce him unclean; his mark is on his head.

As for the diseased person who has the mark, his garments shall be torn, his head shall be left unbound, he shall cover over his mustache, and he shall call out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’

All the days that the mark is on him he shall be unclean; he is unclean. He shall dwell alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp.

Disease in Fabrics and Leather

When there is a mark of scaly disease in a garment, whether a woolen garment or a linen garment,

whether in the warp or in the woof of the linen or the wool, or in a hide or in anything made of hide,

and if the mark is greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the hide, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in any article of hide, it is a mark of scaly disease, and it shall be shown to the priest.

The priest shall examine the mark and isolate the mark for seven days.

On the seventh day he shall examine the mark; if the mark has spread in the garment, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in the hide, whatever the hide is used for as work, the mark is a malignant scaly disease; it is unclean.

He shall burn the garment, or the warp, or the woof, whether wool or linen, or any article of hide in which the mark is, for it is a malignant scaly disease; it shall be burned in the fire.

But if the priest examines it, and behold, the mark has not spread in the garment, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in any article of hide,

then the priest shall command that they wash the article in which the mark is, and he shall isolate it a second seven days.

After the article with the mark has been washed, the priest shall examine it, and behold, if the mark has not changed its appearance and the mark has not spread, it is unclean; you shall burn it in the fire; it is a rotting spot, whether on its worn back or its worn front.

But if the priest examines it, and behold, the mark has faded after it has been washed, then he shall tear it out of the garment, or out of the hide, or out of the warp, or out of the woof.

And if it appears again in the garment, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in any article of hide, it is breaking out afresh; you shall burn in the fire the article in which the mark is.

But the garment, or the warp, or the woof, or any article of hide that you wash, if the mark departs from them, then it shall be washed a second time and be clean.

This is the instruction concerning the mark of scaly disease in a garment of wool or linen, or in the warp or the woof, or in any article of hide, for pronouncing it clean or pronouncing it unclean.
