Joshua 14

The AIT Bible

Dividing the Land West of Jordan

1And these are the areas that the Israelites received as inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the Israelites allotted to them as inheritance,

2by the lot of their inheritance, as Yahweh had commanded through Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe.

3For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.

4For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim; and they gave no portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their possessions.

5As Yahweh had commanded Moses, so the Israelites did, and they divided the land.

Caleb Receives His Inheritance

6Then the sons of Judah drew near to Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You yourself know the word that Yahweh spoke to Moses the man of God concerning me and concerning you at Kadesh-barnea.

7I was forty years old when Moses the servant of Yahweh sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back word to him as it was in my heart.

8But my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt, while I fully followed Yahweh my God.

9So Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance and your children’s forever, because you have fully followed Yahweh my God.’

10And now, look, Yahweh has kept me alive, as he said, these forty-five years since Yahweh spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, look, I am today eighty-five years old.

11I am still today as strong as on the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so is my strength now, for war and for going out and coming in.

12So now give me this hill country of which Yahweh spoke on that day, for you yourself heard on that day that the Anakim are there, with great fortified cities. Perhaps Yahweh will be with me, and I will dispossess them, as Yahweh said.

13Then Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance.

14Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he fully followed Yahweh, the God of Israel.

15Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba; Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim. And the land had rest from war.
