1Now it happened, when Jabin king of Hazor heard of it, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
2and to the kings who were to the north, in the hill country, and in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, and in the Shephelah, and in the heights of Dor to the west,
3to the Canaanite to the east and to the west, and the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill country, and the Hivite below Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
4And they went out, they and all their camps with them, a people as numerous as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots.
5All these kings joined forces, and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom to make war against Israel.
6And Yahweh said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid before them, for tomorrow about this time I am giving all of them slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”
7So Joshua and all the people of war with him came against them suddenly at the waters of Merom, and they fell upon them.
8And Yahweh gave them into the hand of Israel, and they struck them and pursued them as far as Greater Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and as far as the Valley of Mizpeh to the east; and they struck them until they left them no survivor.
9And Joshua did to them as Yahweh had said to him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.
10And at that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor, and he struck its king with the sword, for Hazor formerly was the head of all these kingdoms.
11And they struck down every life that was in it with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction; nothing that breathed was left, and he burned Hazor with fire.
12And all the cities of these kings, and all their kings, Joshua captured, and he struck them with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction, as Moses the servant of Yahweh had commanded.
13However, none of the cities that stood on their mounds did Israel burn, except Hazor alone—that Joshua burned.
14And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock the sons of Israel plundered for themselves; only every human being they struck with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them—they left no one that breathed.
15As Yahweh had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he did not leave undone anything of all that Yahweh had commanded Moses.
16So Joshua took all this land: the hill country, and all the Negev, and all the land of Goshen, and the Shephelah, and the Arabah, and the hill country of Israel with its lowland,
17from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon; and all their kings he captured, and he struck them down and put them to death.
18For many days Joshua made war with all these kings.
19There was not a city that made peace with the sons of Israel except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon; they took all the rest in battle.
20For it was from Yahweh to harden their hearts to meet Israel in battle, so that they might be devoted to destruction, that there might be no favor for them, but that they might be exterminated, as Yahweh had commanded Moses.
21And at that time Joshua came and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel; Joshua devoted them to destruction along with their cities.
22None of the Anakim were left in the land of the sons of Israel; only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain.
23So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that Yahweh had spoken to Moses, and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land had rest from war.
