1Now it happened after these things that the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and the baker offended their lord, the king of Egypt.
2And Pharaoh was furious with his two officials, with the chief cupbearer and with the chief baker,
3and he put them in custody in the house of the chief of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was confined.
4And the chief of the guard assigned Joseph to be with them, and he served them; and they were in custody for some days.
5And the two of them dreamed a dream, each his own dream, in a single night, each dream with its own interpretation — the cupbearer and the baker who belonged to the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison.
6And Joseph came to them in the morning and saw them, and behold, they were dejected.
7So he asked the officials of Pharaoh who were with him in custody in his lord’s house, saying, “Why do you look so downcast today?”
8And they said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one to interpret it.” And Joseph said to them, “Do interpretations not belong to God? Tell it to me, please.”
9So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph and said to him, “In my dream, behold, there was a vine before me,
10and on the vine were three branches; and as it budded, its blossom came up, and its clusters ripened into grapes.
11And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I placed the cup in Pharaoh’s palm.”
12And Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days.
13In three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your post, and you will place Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, according to the former custom when you were his cupbearer.
14But remember me when it goes well with you, and please deal loyally with me: mention me to Pharaoh and bring me out of this house.
15For I was indeed stolen away from the land of the Hebrews, and here too I have done nothing, that they should put me in the pit.”
16And when the chief baker saw that he had interpreted well, he said to Joseph, “I too was in my dream, and behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head,
17and in the topmost basket were all kinds of food for Pharaoh, the work of a baker, and the birds were eating them out of the basket off my head.”
18And Joseph answered and said, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days.
19In three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head from off you and hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh off you.”
20And it happened on the third day, Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker in the midst of his servants.
21And he restored the chief cupbearer to his cupbearing, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s palm;
22but the chief baker he hanged, just as Joseph had interpreted to them.
23Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.
