1Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an official of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian man, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there.
2And Yahweh was with Joseph, and he became a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3And his master saw that Yahweh was with him, and that all that he did Yahweh made successful in his hand.
4So Joseph found favor in his eyes and served him, and he appointed him over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
5And it happened that from the time he appointed him over his house and over all that he had, Yahweh blessed the house of the Egyptian on account of Joseph; and the blessing of Yahweh was on all that he had, in the house and in the field.
6So he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and with him he concerned himself with nothing except the bread that he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and handsome in appearance.
7And it happened after these things that his master’s wife lifted up her eyes toward Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.”
8But he refused, and he said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here my master concerns himself with nothing in the house, and all that he has he has put into my hand.
9He himself is not greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do this great evil and sin against God?”
10And it happened, though she spoke to Joseph day after day, that he did not listen to her, to lie beside her, to be with her.
11Then it happened on a certain day that he came into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was there in the house.
12And she caught hold of him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and went outside.
13And it happened, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside,
14that she called to the men of her house and said to them, “See, he has brought us a Hebrew man to mock us! He came to me to lie with me, but I called out with a loud voice.
15And it happened, when he heard that I raised my voice and called out, that he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside.”
16And she laid up his garment beside her until his master came to his house.
17Then she spoke to him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came to me to mock me.
18And it happened, when I raised my voice and called out, that he left his garment beside me and fled outside.”
19And it happened, when his master heard the words of his wife which she spoke to him, saying, “According to these words your servant did to me,” that his anger burned.
20So Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison house, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined; and he was there in the prison house.
21But Yahweh was with Joseph and extended loyal love to him, and he gave him favor in the eyes of the keeper of the prison house.
22And the keeper of the prison house put into Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison house, and whatever was done there, he was the one doing it.
23The keeper of the prison house did not look into anything in his hand, because Yahweh was with him; and whatever he did, Yahweh made successful.
