1And it happened at the end of two full years that Pharaoh was dreaming, and behold, he was standing by the Nile.
2And behold, out of the Nile came up seven cows, beautiful in appearance and fat of flesh, and they grazed in the reed grass.
3And behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the Nile, ugly in appearance and thin of flesh, and they stood beside the cows on the bank of the Nile.
4And the cows ugly in appearance and thin of flesh ate up the seven cows beautiful in appearance and fat. Then Pharaoh awoke.
5And he slept and dreamed a second time, and behold, seven ears of grain came up on a single stalk, plump and good.
6And behold, seven ears, thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them.
7And the thin ears swallowed up the seven plump and full ears. Then Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.
8And it happened in the morning that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. And Pharaoh told them his dream, but there was no one to interpret them for Pharaoh.
9Then the chief of the cupbearers spoke to Pharaoh, saying, “My offenses I bring to remembrance today.
10Pharaoh was angry with his servants and put me in custody in the house of the chief of the guard—me and the chief baker.
11And we dreamed a dream on the same night, I and he; each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of his own dream.
12And there with us was a young Hebrew man, a servant of the chief of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted our dreams for us—for each man he interpreted according to his own dream.
13And it happened that just as he interpreted for us, so it came to be: me he restored to my post, and him he hanged.”
14Then Pharaoh sent and called for Joseph, and they rushed him from the pit; and he shaved himself and changed his garments and came in to Pharaoh.
15And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that you can hear a dream and interpret it.”
16And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It is not in me; God will answer for Pharaoh’s welfare.”
17And Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, “In my dream, behold, I was standing on the bank of the Nile.
18And behold, out of the Nile came up seven cows, fat of flesh and beautiful in form, and they grazed in the reed grass.
19And behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly in form and thin of flesh; I have never seen any so bad in all the land of Egypt.
20And the thin and ugly cows ate up the first seven fat cows.
21But when they had gone into their belly, it could not be known that they had gone into their belly, for their appearance was as bad as at the beginning. Then I awoke.
22And I saw in my dream, and behold, seven ears came up on a single stalk, full and good.
23And behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them.
24And the thin ears swallowed up the seven good ears. And I told this to the magicians, but there was no one to explain it to me.”
25And Joseph said to Pharaoh, “Pharaoh’s dream is one; God has told Pharaoh what he is about to do.
26The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good ears are seven years; the dream is one.
27And the seven thin and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven empty ears scorched by the east wind—they will be seven years of famine.
28This is the matter that I spoke to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do.
29Behold, seven years are coming of great abundance in all the land of Egypt.
30But seven years of famine will arise after them, and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine will consume the land.
31And the plenty will not be known in the land because of that famine afterward, for it will be very severe.
32And as for the doubling of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it is because the matter is fixed by God, and God is hurrying to do it.
33And now let Pharaoh look for a man discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.
34Let Pharaoh act, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and take a fifth of the land of Egypt during the seven years of plenty.
35And let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming, and store up grain under Pharaoh’s hand as food in the cities, and keep it.
36And the food will be a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine that will be in the land of Egypt, so that the land will not be cut off by the famine.
37And the matter was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants.
38And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the spirit of God?”
39And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one discerning and wise like you.
40You shall be over my house, and by your mouth all my people shall kiss; only in the throne will I be greater than you.”
41And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”
42And Pharaoh removed his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen, and placed the gold chain on his neck.
43And he had him ride in the second chariot that he had, and they called out before him, “Abrek!” So he set him over all the land of Egypt.
44And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, and without you no man shall lift his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt.”
45And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphenath-Paneah, and he gave him Asenath the daughter of Potiphera priest of On as a wife. And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.
46And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from before Pharaoh and passed through all the land of Egypt.
47And in the seven years of plenty the land produced by handfuls.
48And he gathered all the food of the seven years that were in the land of Egypt, and put food in the cities; the food of the field around each city he put within it.
49And Joseph stored up grain like the sand of the sea, exceedingly much, until he stopped counting, for it was without number.
50And to Joseph two sons were born before the year of famine came, whom Asenath the daughter of Potiphera priest of On bore to him.
51And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, “For God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s house.”
52And the name of the second he called Ephraim, “For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
53And the seven years of plenty that were in the land of Egypt came to an end,
54and the seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. And there was famine in all the lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.
55And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread. And Pharaoh said to all Egypt, “Go to Joseph; whatever he says to you, do.”
56And the famine was over all the face of the land, and Joseph opened all that was among them and sold to the Egyptians; and the famine grew strong in the land of Egypt.
57And all the earth came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, for the famine was strong in all the earth.
