1Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same resolve, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
2so as to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for the will of God.
3For the time that has passed is sufficient to have carried out the will of the Gentiles, having proceeded in debaucheries, lusts, drunkenness, carousings, drinking bouts, and lawless idolatries.
4In this they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they slander you—
5they who will give an account to the one who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
6For this reason the gospel was also proclaimed to those who are now dead, so that though they might be judged in the flesh according to human standards, they might live according to God in the spirit.
7But the end of all things has drawn near. Be therefore clear-minded and sober for prayers;
8above all, keeping your love for one another fervent, because love covers a multitude of sins;
9be hospitable to one another without grumbling.
10As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of the varied grace of God:
11if anyone speaks, let it be as the oracles of God; if anyone serves, let it be as from the strength that God supplies, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the might forever and ever. Amen.
12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you,
13but rejoice insofar as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that at the revelation of his glory you may also rejoice, exulting.
14If you are reproached for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.
15For let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler in others’ affairs;
16but if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this name.
17For it is the time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins first with us, what will be the end of those who disobey the gospel of God?
18And if the righteous one is barely saved, where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?
19So then, let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing good.
