The Inhabitants of Jerusalem

So all Israel was enrolled by genealogy, and behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel. And Judah was exiled to Babylon for their unfaithfulness.

Now the first inhabitants who lived in their possession, in their towns, were Israel, the priests, the Levites, and the temple servants.

And in Jerusalem lived some of the sons of Judah, of the sons of Benjamin, and of the sons of Ephraim and Manasseh:

Uthai son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, of the sons of Perez son of Judah.

And of the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn and his sons.

And of the sons of Zerah: Jeuel, and their kinsmen — six hundred and ninety.

And of the sons of Benjamin: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah;

and Ibneiah son of Jeroham; and Elah son of Uzzi, son of Michri; and Meshullam son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah;

and their kinsmen according to their generations — nine hundred and fifty-six. All these men were heads of ancestral houses, by their fathers’ houses.

And of the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, and Jachin;

and Azariah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, chief officer of the house of God;

and Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah; and Maasai son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer;

and their kinsmen, heads of their fathers’ houses — one thousand seven hundred and sixty — mighty men of valor for the work of the service of the house of God.

And of the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, of the sons of Merari;

and Bakbakkar, Heresh, and Galal; and Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zichri, son of Asaph;

and Obadiah son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun; and Berechiah son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.

And the gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, and Ahiman, and their kinsman Shallum was the chief.

And until now they are at the king’s gate on the east side. These were the gatekeepers for the camps of the sons of Levi.

And Shallum son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his kinsmen of his father’s house, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the thresholds of the tent; and their fathers had been over the camp of Yahweh, keepers of the entrance.

And Phinehas son of Eleazar had been chief officer over them in former times; Yahweh was with him.

Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was gatekeeper at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

All these who were chosen as gatekeepers at the thresholds numbered two hundred and twelve. These were enrolled by genealogy in their villages. David and Samuel the seer established them in their office of trust.

So they and their sons were in charge of the gates of the house of Yahweh, the house of the tent, by watches.

The gatekeepers were on the four sides: east, west, north, and south.

And their kinsmen in their villages had to come in for seven days, from time to time, to be with these.

For in trust these four chief gatekeepers were on duty; they were Levites, and they were over the chambers and over the treasuries of the house of God.

And around the house of God they would lodge, for the watch was upon them, and they were in charge of the key, morning by morning.

And some of them were in charge of the vessels of the service, for by count they would bring them in and by count they would take them out.

And some of them were appointed over the vessels and over all the holy vessels, and over the fine flour, the wine, the oil, the frankincense, and the spices.

And some of the sons of the priests mixed the compound of spices.

And Mattithiah of the Levites, he was the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted over the making of the flat cakes baked on the griddle.

And some of their kinsmen, of the sons of the Kohathites, were over the bread of the row, to prepare it every Sabbath.

And these were the singers, heads of ancestral houses of the Levites, in the chambers, exempt from other duty; for day and night they were charged with the work.

These were heads of the ancestral houses of the Levites, according to their generations, chiefs; these dwelt in Jerusalem.

The Genealogy of King Saul

And in Gibeon dwelt the father of Gibeon, Jeiel, and the name of his wife was Maacah.

And his firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, and Nadab,

And Mikloth fathered Shimeam; and they too, opposite their kinsmen, dwelt in Jerusalem alongside their kinsmen.

And Ner fathered Kish, and Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.
