1In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of Yahweh came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying:
2Thus says Yahweh of hosts: This people say, “The time has not come, the time for the house of Yahweh to be rebuilt.”
3Then the word of Yahweh came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying:
4Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?
5And now, thus says Yahweh of hosts: Set your heart upon your ways.
6You have sown much, but harvested little; you eat, but there is no satisfaction; you drink, but not enough to be filled; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and the one who earns wages earns them into a bag with holes.
7Thus says Yahweh of hosts: Set your heart upon your ways.
8Go up to the mountain, bring wood, and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified, says Yahweh.
9You looked for much, but behold, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew upon it. Why? declares Yahweh of hosts. Because of my house, which lies in ruins, while each of you runs to his own house.
10Therefore, on account of you the heavens have withheld their dew, and the earth has withheld its produce.
11And I called for a drought upon the land and upon the mountains, upon the grain, upon the new wine, upon the fresh oil, upon whatever the ground brings forth, upon humanity, upon the livestock, and upon all the labor of your hands.
12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all the remnant of the people obeyed the voice of Yahweh their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as Yahweh their God had sent him; and the people feared before Yahweh.
13Then Haggai, the messenger of Yahweh, spoke by the message of Yahweh to the people, saying, “I am with you, declares Yahweh.”
14And Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work on the house of Yahweh of hosts, their God,
15on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
