Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying:
“Son of man, make Jerusalem know her abominations,
and say: Thus says the Lord Yahweh to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth are from the land of the Canaanite; your father was the Amorite, and your mother a Hittite.
As for your birth, on the day you were born your umbilical cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to cleanse you; you were not rubbed with salt at all, nor were you wrapped in swaddling bands at all.
No eye had pity on you to do any one of these things for you, to have compassion on you; but you were thrown out onto the open field, in loathing for your life, on the day you were born.
Then I passed by you and saw you kicking about in your blood, and I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ and I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’
I made you into myriads, like a plant of the field; and you grew and matured and came to full adornment. Your breasts were formed and your hair had grown, but you were naked and bare.
Then I passed by you and saw you, and behold, your time was the time for love. So I spread my wing over you and covered your nakedness; I swore to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord Yahweh, and you became mine.
Then I washed you with water and rinsed off your blood from you, and I anointed you with oil.
I clothed you with embroidered cloth and put sandals of fine leather on you; I wrapped you in fine linen and covered you with silk.
I adorned you with ornaments: I put bracelets on your hands and a necklace on your throat,
and I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears, and a crown of splendor on your head.
So you adorned yourself with gold and silver, and your clothing was fine linen and silk and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour and honey and oil, and you became exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty.
And your fame went out among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendor that I bestowed on you, declares the Lord Yahweh.
But you trusted in your beauty and played the whore because of your fame, and you poured out your whorings on every passerby—his it would be.
You took some of your garments and made for yourself colorful high places, and you played the whore on them—things that should not come to be, nor should happen.
You also took your beautiful vessels made of my gold and my silver that I had given you, and you made for yourself male images and played the whore with them.
You took your embroidered garments and covered them, and you set my oil and my incense before them.
And my bread that I gave you—the fine flour and oil and honey I fed you—you set it before them as a pleasing aroma. So it happened, declares the Lord Yahweh.
You even took your sons and your daughters, whom you had borne to me, and sacrificed them to them as food. Was your whoring so small a thing,
that you slaughtered my children and gave them up, passing them through the fire to them?
And in all your abominations and your whorings you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, wallowing about in your blood you were.
And it came about, after all your evil—woe, woe to you! declares the Lord Yahweh—
that you built yourself a mound and made yourself a high platform in every public square.
At the head of every road you built your high platform, and you made your beauty an abomination, and you spread your legs to every passerby and multiplied your whorings.
You played the whore with the sons of Egypt, your neighbors, big of flesh, and you multiplied your whoring to provoke me to anger.
So behold, I stretched out my hand against you and diminished your allotted portion, and I gave you over to the desire of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd way.
You played the whore with the sons of Assyria because you were not satisfied; you whored with them, and still you were not satisfied.
You multiplied your whoring toward the land of trade, toward Chaldea, and even with this you were not satisfied.
How feverish was your heart, declares the Lord Yahweh, when you did all these things, the deeds of a brazen, domineering prostitute,
When you built your mound at the head of every road and made your high place in every square, yet you were not like a prostitute in that you scorned payment.
The adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband!
To all prostitutes they give a gift, but you gave your gifts to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from all around for your whorings.
So with you it was the opposite of other women in your whorings: no one whored after you; and in that you gave payment while no payment was given to you — you became the opposite.
Therefore, O prostitute, hear the word of Yahweh!
Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your whorings with your lovers, and because of all your abominable idols and the blood of your children whom you gave to them,
therefore behold, I am going to gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all whom you loved along with all whom you hated; I will gather them against you from all around and will uncover your nakedness to them, and they will see all your nakedness.
I will judge you with the judgments of adulteresses and those who shed blood, and I will make you blood of wrath and jealousy.
I will give you into their hand, and they will tear down your mound and demolish your high places; they will strip off your clothes and take your fine jewelry, and leave you naked and bare.
They will bring up an assembly against you, and they will stone you with stones and cut you to pieces with their swords.
They will burn your houses with fire and execute judgments upon you in the sight of many women; and I will make you cease from being a prostitute, and you will also give payment no more.
Then I will set my wrath to rest against you, and my jealousy will turn away from you; I will be quiet and will not be angry anymore.
Because you did not remember the days of your youth but enraged me with all these things, therefore I in turn have brought your conduct down on your own head, declares the Lord Yahweh — did you not commit this lewdness on top of all your abominations?
Behold, everyone who quotes proverbs will use this proverb against you: ‘Like mother, like daughter.’
You are your mother’s daughter, who loathed her husband and her children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.
Your older sister is Samaria with her daughters, who dwells to your left; and your younger sister, who dwells to your right, is Sodom with her daughters.
Yet you did not walk in their ways and do according to their abominations; as though that were too little, you grew more corrupt than they in all your ways.
As I live, declares the Lord Yahweh, Sodom your sister — she and her daughters — has not done as you and your daughters have done.
Behold, this was the iniquity of Sodom your sister: she and her daughters had pride, abundance of food, and careless ease, but they did not strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
They grew haughty and did abomination before me, so I removed them when I saw it.
And Samaria did not commit half your sins; you multiplied your abominations more than they, and you made your sister appear righteous by all the abominations you did.
You too, bear your disgrace, for you interceded on behalf of your sister; by your sins in which you acted more abominably than they, they are more righteous than you. So you too, be ashamed and bear your disgrace, since you have made your sisters appear righteous.
I will restore their fortunes — the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters — and your fortunes along with them,
so that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all you have done in giving them comfort.
Your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, will return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters will return to their former state, and you and your daughters will return to your former state.
Was not Sodom your sister a byword in your mouth in the day of your pride,
before your own evil was uncovered, as at the time of the reproach of the daughters of Aram and all those around her, the daughters of the Philistines, who despise you on every side?
Your lewdness and your abominations — you must bear them, declares Yahweh.
For thus says the Lord Yahweh: I will deal with you as you have dealt, you who despised the oath by breaking the covenant.
Yet I myself will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish for you an everlasting covenant.
Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your sisters, both those older than you and those younger than you, and I will give them to you as daughters, but not on account of your covenant.
And I myself will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am Yahweh,
so that you may remember and be ashamed, and no longer open your mouth because of your disgrace, when I make atonement for you for all that you have done, declares the Lord Yahweh.
