1They set out from Elim, and the whole congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt.
2And the whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness.
3The sons of Israel said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of Yahweh in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
4Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain down bread for you from the heavens. The people shall go out and gather a day’s portion each day, so that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.
5And on the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it shall be double what they gather day by day.”
6So Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, “In the evening you shall know that it was Yahweh who brought you out from the land of Egypt,
7and in the morning you shall see the glory of Yahweh, for he has heard your grumblings against Yahweh. And what are we, that you grumble against us?”
8And Moses said, “When Yahweh gives you meat to eat in the evening and bread in the morning to the full, because Yahweh has heard your grumblings that you grumble against him — for what are we? Your grumblings are not against us but against Yahweh.”
9Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, ‘Draw near before Yahweh, for he has heard your grumblings.’”
10And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, they turned toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of Yahweh appeared in the cloud.
11And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
12“I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel. Speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God.’”
13And it happened in the evening that the quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.
14When the layer of dew lifted, behold, on the surface of the wilderness was a fine, flaky thing, fine as frost on the ground.
15When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” — for they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that Yahweh has given you to eat.
16This is the thing that Yahweh has commanded: ‘Gather of it, each according to what he can eat, an omer per head, according to the number of your persons; each of you shall take for those who are in his tent.’”
17And the sons of Israel did so; they gathered, some more, some less.
18But when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much had no surplus, and the one who gathered little had no lack; each gathered according to what he could eat.
19And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over until morning.”
20But they did not listen to Moses; some men left part of it over until morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them.
21So they gathered it morning by morning, each according to what he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.
22And it happened on the sixth day that they gathered double bread, two omers apiece; and all the leaders of the congregation came and reported it to Moses.
23And he said to them, “This is what Yahweh has spoken: ‘Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy sabbath to Yahweh. Bake what you would bake and boil what you would boil, and all that is left over set aside for yourselves as a thing to be kept until morning.’”
24So they set it aside until morning, as Moses had commanded, and it did not stink, nor was there any maggot in it.
25And Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to Yahweh; today you will not find it in the field.
26Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be none in it.”
27Yet it happened on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none.
28And Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?
29See, because Yahweh has given you the sabbath, therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Let each of you stay where he is; let no one go out from his place on the seventh day.”
30So the people rested on the seventh day.
31And the house of Israel called its name manna. It was like coriander seed, white, and its taste was like wafers made with honey.
32And Moses said, “This is the thing that Yahweh has commanded: ‘Let an omer-full of it be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness when I brought you out from the land of Egypt.’”
33And Moses said to Aaron, “Take one jar and put in it an omer-full of manna, and set it before Yahweh to be kept throughout your generations.”
34As Yahweh commanded Moses, so Aaron set it before the Testimony to be kept.
35And the sons of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.
36Now the omer is a tenth of an ephah.
