1And the fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to the earth, and to it was given the key to the shaft of the abyss.
2And it opened the shaft of the abyss, and smoke went up out of the shaft like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the shaft.
3And out of the smoke came locusts onto the earth, and to them was given authority like the authority that the scorpions of the earth have.
4And it was told them not to harm the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
5And it was granted them not to kill them, but that they should be tormented for five months; and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings a person.
6And in those days people will seek death and will by no means find it, and they will long to die, and death flees from them.
7And the appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle, and on their heads were what looked like crowns resembling gold, and their faces were like the faces of humans,
8and they had hair like women’s hair, and their teeth were like those of lions,
9and they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots of many horses running into battle.
10And they have tails like scorpions, and stingers; and in their tails is their authority to harm people for five months.
11They have as king over them the angel of the abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name Apollyon.
12The first woe has passed; behold, two more woes are still coming after these things.
13And the sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a single voice from the four horns of the golden altar that is before God,
14saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”
15And the four angels were released, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, so that they might kill a third of humanity.
16And the number of the troops of the cavalry was twice ten thousand times ten thousand; I heard their number.
17And this is how I saw the horses in the vision, and those seated on them: they had breastplates the color of fire and of hyacinth and of sulfur; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions, and out of their mouths came fire and smoke and sulfur.
18By these three plagues a third of humanity was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the sulfur that came out of their mouths.
19For the authority of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads, and with them they inflict harm.
20And the rest of humanity, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, so as to stop worshiping the demons and the idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk;
21and they did not repent of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their sexual immorality, nor of their thefts.
