1Then the lot fell for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph—for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, so Gilead and Bashan became his.
2And it came to pass for the rest of the sons of Manasseh by their clans: for the sons of Abiezer, for the sons of Helek, for the sons of Asriel, for the sons of Shechem, for the sons of Hepher, and for the sons of Shemida. These were the male descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph, by their clans.
3But Zelophehad son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh had no sons, only daughters. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
4They came before Eleazar the priest and before Joshua son of Nun and before the leaders, saying, “Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” So according to the mouth of Yahweh he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.
5So ten portions fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan,
6because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance among his sons; and the land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the sons of Manasseh.
7The border of Manasseh ran from Asher to Michmethath, which is opposite Shechem; then the border went to the right, to the inhabitants of En-tappuah.
8The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh, but Tappuah itself, on the border of Manasseh, belonged to the sons of Ephraim.
9Then the border went down to the Wadi Kanah, south of the wadi. These cities belonged to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh, but the border of Manasseh was on the north side of the wadi, and its limits ran to the sea.
10To the south it was Ephraim’s, and to the north it was Manasseh’s, and the sea was its border. On the north they reached Asher, and on the east Issachar.
11In Issachar and in Asher, Manasseh had Beth-shean and its daughter-towns, Ibleam and its daughter-towns, the inhabitants of Dor and its daughter-towns, the inhabitants of En-dor and its daughter-towns, the inhabitants of Taanach and its daughter-towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its daughter-towns—the three heights.
12Yet the sons of Manasseh were not able to dispossess these cities, and the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in this land.
13And it happened, when the sons of Israel grew strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but they did not utterly dispossess them.
14The sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, “Why have you given me as an inheritance one lot and one portion, seeing that I am a numerous people, since so far Yahweh has blessed me?”
15And Joshua said to them, “If you are a numerous people, go up to the forest and clear ground for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and the Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too cramped for you.”
16But the sons of Joseph said, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron—those in Beth-shean and its daughter-towns, and those in the Valley of Jezreel.”
17Then Joshua said to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and to Manasseh, “You are a numerous people and have great power. You shall not have just one lot,
18but the hill country shall be yours; though it is forest, you shall clear it, and its farthest limits shall be yours. For you shall dispossess the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron and though they are strong.”
