Behold, any hope of him is disappointed; will one not be cast down at the very sight of him?
None is fierce enough to rouse him; who then is he that can take his stand before me?
Who has confronted me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under all the heavens is mine.
I will not keep silent about his limbs, or his mighty deeds, or the grace of his frame.
Who can strip off his outer garment? Who can come within his double coat of mail?
Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror.
His back is rows of shields, shut up close as with a tight seal.
One is joined to another, and no air can come between them.
Each clings to its neighbor; they interlock and cannot be parted.
His sneezings flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of dawn.
From his mouth go torches; sparks of fire leap out.
From his nostrils comes smoke, as from a boiling pot and burning rushes.
His breath sets coals ablaze, and a flame goes out from his mouth.
In his neck lodges strength, and before him dismay dances.
The folds of his flesh cling together; they are cast firm upon him, immovable.
His heart is cast hard as stone, cast hard as the lower millstone.
When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; at the crashing they lose themselves.
The sword that reaches him will not prevail, nor the spear, the dart, or the coat of mail.
He counts iron as straw, bronze as rotten wood.
The arrow does not make him flee; slingstones turn to stubble against him.
A club is counted as stubble, and he laughs at the whir of the javelin.
His underparts are sharp potsherds; he spreads a threshing-sledge upon the mire.
He makes the deep boil like a pot; he makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
Behind him he leaves a shining wake; one would think the deep to be white-haired.
On earth there is nothing like him, a creature made without fear.
He looks on everything lofty; he is king over all the sons of pride.
