1After the uproar ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging them, he said farewell and departed for Macedonia.
2After traveling through those regions and giving them much encouragement, he came to Greece,
3where he stayed for three months. When a plot was formed against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia.
4He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea; from the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy; and from the province of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.
5These went on ahead and were waiting for us in Troas.
6But we sailed from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days we joined them at Troas, where we stayed for seven days.
7On the first day of the week, when we were gathered to break bread, Paul began to discourse with them, as he was intending to depart the next day, and he prolonged his message until midnight.
8There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered.
9A young man named Eutychus was sitting on the windowsill, sinking into a deep sleep as Paul spoke on and on. Overpowered by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead.
10But Paul went down, fell upon him, and taking him in his arms, said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.”
11Then he went up, broke the bread and ate, and after conversing for a long while, until daybreak, he departed.
12And they brought the young man in alive and were greatly comforted.
13But we went on ahead to the ship and set sail for Assos, intending to take Paul on board there, for he had arranged it this way, intending to go there on foot himself.
14When he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene.
15Sailing from there, we arrived opposite Chios the next day. On the day after, we put in at Samos, and on the following day, we came to Miletus.
16For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he would not have to spend time in Asia, because he was hurrying to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost.
17From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church.
18When they came to him, he said to them: “You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time,
19serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and trials that came upon me through the plots of the Jews;
20how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house,
21testifying solemnly to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus.
22And now, behold, bound in the spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there,
23except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me.
24But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my race and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus: to testify to the gospel of God’s grace.
25And now, behold, I know that none of you, among whom I went about proclaiming the kingdom, will see my face again.
26Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all,
27for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.
28Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
29I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock;
30and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things to draw away the disciples after them.
31Therefore, be on the alert, remembering that for three years, night and day, I did not cease admonishing each one with tears.
32And now I entrust you to the Lord and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all who have been sanctified.
33I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothing.
34You yourselves know that these hands of mine have provided for my own needs and for those who were with me.
35In everything I have shown you that by working hard in this way you must help the weak, and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
36And when he had said these things, he knelt down with all of them and prayed.
37And there was much weeping on the part of all, and falling on Paul’s neck, they began to kiss him affectionately,
38grieving most of all over the word he had spoken—that they would no longer see his face. Then they escorted him to the ship.
