1Now these are the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he was still confined because of Saul son of Kish; and they were among the mighty men who helped in the battle.
2They were armed with the bow and could use both the right hand and the left in slinging stones and shooting arrows with the bow. They were of Saul’s kinsmen, from Benjamin.
3The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; also Jeziel and Pelet, sons of Azmaveth; and Beracah, and Jehu the Anathothite;
4and Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty and over the thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, and Jozabad the Gederathite;
5Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite;
6Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korahites;
7and Joelah and Zebadiah, sons of Jeroham, from Gedor.
8From the Gadites there separated themselves to David, at the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty warriors, men fit for war, ready with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and who were as swift as gazelles on the mountains:
9Ezer the chief, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third,
10Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,
11Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,
12Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,
13Jeremiah the tenth, Machbannai the eleventh.
14These were from the sons of Gad, chiefs of the army; the least was equal to a hundred, and the greatest to a thousand.
15These are the ones who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it was overflowing all its banks, and they put to flight all those in the valleys, both to the east and to the west.
16Some of the sons of Benjamin and Judah also came to David at the stronghold.
17David went out before them and answered and said to them, “If you have come to me in peace, to help me, my heart will be united with you; but if it is to betray me to my adversaries, though there is no violence in my hands, may the God of our fathers see it and render judgment.”
18Then the Spirit clothed Amasai, chief of the thirty: “We are yours, O David, and with you, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to the one who helps you, for your God helps you.” So David received them and made them officers of the raiding band.
19Some of Manasseh also defected to David when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle — though they did not help the Philistines, for the lords of the Philistines after consultation sent him away, saying, “At the cost of our heads he will defect to his master Saul.”
20As he went to Ziklag, these from Manasseh defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, chiefs of the thousands who belonged to Manasseh.
21They helped David against the raiding band, for they were all mighty men of valor, and they became commanders in the army.
22For day by day men kept coming to David to help him, until it became a great camp, like the camp of God.
23Now these are the numbers of the chiefs of those equipped for war who came to David at Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him, according to the mouth of Yahweh:
24The sons of Judah bearing shield and spear were six thousand eight hundred, equipped for war.
25Of the sons of Simeon, mighty men of valor for war, seven thousand one hundred.
26Of the sons of Levi, four thousand six hundred.
27And Jehoiada, the leader of the house of Aaron, and with him three thousand seven hundred;
28and Zadok, a young man, a mighty man of valor, and his father’s house, twenty-two commanders.
29Of the sons of Benjamin, the kinsmen of Saul, three thousand; up to now the greater part of them had kept their allegiance to the house of Saul.
30And from the sons of Ephraim, twenty thousand eight hundred, mighty men of valor, men of renown by their fathers’ houses.
31And from the half-tribe of Manasseh, eighteen thousand, who were designated by name to come and make David king.
32And from the sons of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel should do—their chiefs were two hundred, and all their kinsmen were at their command.
33From Zebulun, those going out to war, drawn up for battle with all weapons of war, fifty thousand, and to keep rank with no double heart.
34And from Naphtali, a thousand commanders, and with them thirty-seven thousand with shield and spear.
35And from the Danites, drawn up for battle, twenty-eight thousand six hundred.
36And from Asher, those going out to war, to draw up for battle, forty thousand.
37And from beyond the Jordan, from the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, with all the weapons of war for battle, one hundred and twenty thousand.
38All these, men of war, arraying the battle line, came to Hebron with a whole heart to make David king over all Israel; and also all the rest of Israel were of one heart to make David king.
39And they were there with David three days, eating and drinking, for their kinsmen had prepared for them.
40And also those near them, as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, were bringing food on donkeys and on camels and on mules and on oxen—provisions of flour, cakes of figs and clusters of raisins, and wine and oil, and cattle and sheep in abundance, for there was joy in Israel.
