Then all Israel gathered themselves to David at Hebron, saying, “Look, we are your bone and your flesh.
Even in times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in. And Yahweh your God said to you, ‘You shall shepherd my people Israel, and you shall be ruler over my people Israel.’”
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before Yahweh; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of Yahweh by the hand of Samuel.
Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus), where the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were.
The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not come in here.” But David captured the stronghold of Zion, that is, the City of David.
David said, “Whoever strikes down a Jebusite first shall become chief and commander.” So Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and he became chief.
And David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore they called it the City of David.
He built the city all around, from the Millo even to the surrounding area, and Joab restored the rest of the city.
And David kept growing greater and greater, for Yahweh of Hosts was with him.
Now these are the chiefs of the mighty men who were David’s, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of Yahweh concerning Israel.
And this is the number of the mighty men who were David’s: Jashobeam son of a Hachmonite, chief of the thirty; he wielded his spear against three hundred slain at one time.
After him was Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite; he was among the three mighty men.
He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines were gathered there for battle, and there was a plot of the field full of barley; and the people fled before the Philistines.
But they took their stand in the middle of the plot and delivered it, and struck down the Philistines; and Yahweh brought about a great deliverance.
Three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock, to David, to the cave of Adullam, while the army of the Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.
David was then in the stronghold, while the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem.
And David longed and said, “Oh, that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!”
Then the three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and carried it and brought it to David; but David would not drink it, and poured it out to Yahweh.
And he said, “Far be it from me before my God that I should do this! Shall I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives? For at the risk of their lives they brought it.” So he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did.
Now Abshai the brother of Joab—he was chief of the three; and he wielded his spear against three hundred slain, and he had a name among the three.
Of the three he was more honored than the two, and he became their commander; but he did not attain to the three.
Benaiah son of Jehoiada, son of a valiant man, great in deeds, from Kabzeel; he struck down the two Ariel of Moab, and he went down and struck down the lion inside the pit on a snowy day.
He also struck down the Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits tall; in the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam, but he went down against him with a staff, wrested the spear from the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.
These things Benaiah son of Jehoiada did, and he had a name among the three mighty men.
Among the thirty he was honored, but he did not attain to the three; and David set him over his bodyguard.
And the mighty men of the armies were: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo of Bethlehem,
Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite,
Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite,
Sibbecai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite,
Maharai the Netophathite, Heled son of Baanah the Netophathite,
Ithai son of Ribai from Gibeah of the sons of Benjamin, Benaiah the Pirathonite,
Hurai of the wadis of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite,
Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite,
the sons of Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan son of Shageh the Hararite,
Ahiam son of Sacar the Hararite, Eliphal son of Ur,
Hepher the Mekerathite, Ahijah the Pelonite,
Hezro the Carmelite, Naarai son of Ezbai,
Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar son of Hagri,
Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, the armor-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah,
Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,
Uriah the Hittite, Zabad son of Ahlai,
Adina son of Shiza the Reubenite, a chief of the Reubenites, and thirty with him,
Hanan son of Maacah, and Joshaphat the Mithnite,
Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite,
Jediael son of Shimri, and Joha his brother, the Tizite,
Eliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai and Joshaviah the sons of Elnaam, and Ithmah the Moabite,
Eliel and Obed and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.
