Sirach 1

The AIT Bible

The Source of All Wisdom

All wisdom is from Yahweh, and with him it is forever.

The sand of the seas, the drops of rain, and the days of eternity—who can count them?

The height of the heavens, the breadth of the earth, and the depth of the abyss—who can explore them?

Wisdom is greater than all these, and truth has prevailed from eternity.

The root of wisdom—to whom has it been revealed? And its subtleties—who has known them?

One is he, awesome alone, God, ruling over all its treasures.

He examined her, saw her, and numbered her, and gave her to those who love him.

He gave her to all flesh according to his will, and he granted her to those who love him.

He himself created her, saw her, and numbered her; he poured her out upon all his works,

and upon all flesh according to his gift, and he has supplied her to those who love him.

The Fear of Yahweh is Wisdom

The fear of Yahweh is glory and honor, greatness and a crown of splendor.

The fear of Yahweh makes the heart rejoice; it gives gladness, grace, and length of days.

For one who fears Yahweh, his end will be good, and at the end of his days he will be blessed.

The beginning of wisdom is the fear of Yahweh; it was formed with the faithful in the womb.

It was established with people of truth from of old, and his kindness is faithful to their descendants.

The beginning of wisdom is the fear of Yahweh; it increases peace, life, and healing.

It fills all its treasuries with delight, and its storehouses with its produce.

The beginning of wisdom is the fear of Yahweh, and it drenches one with its abundant produce.

It is a staff of strength and a support, praise and eternal glory for all who follow it.

Its roots are forever, and its branches are length of days.

The Blessedness of Seeking Wisdom

Happy is the person who meditates on it; it is better for him than any treasure.

Happy is the person who draws near to it and delights in its precepts.

It will place an eternal crown on him, and everlasting merit among the holy ones.

He will rejoice in it and it will rejoice in him, and it will not forsake him forever.

The angels of God will rejoice in it and recount all the praise of Yahweh.

An Exhortation to Hear and Do

This entire book is full of it; happy is the person who hears and acts.

Hear me, you who fear God; listen and pay attention to my words. Who desires to possess it, an eternal inheritance and great joy?

Hear and do all my words, and you will be written in the book of life.

Love the fear of Yahweh, and let your heart be happy in it, and do not be afraid.

Draw near and do not delay, and you will find life for your soul. When you are near, be like a mighty man, a man of valor.

Warning Against False Piety

My son, do not be false in the fear of Yahweh, and do not approach him with a divided heart.

Do not seek honor in it before people, and be very careful with your lips.

Do not alter his word and do not fear, and do not bring a curse upon your soul.

Lest Yahweh reveal your secrets and cast you down in the midst of the assembly.

For you acted proudly in the fear of God, while your inner heart was full of deceit.
