The shortest book in the Old Testament, Obadiah is a brief but fiery oracle of judgment against the nation of Edom. Rooted in the ancient sibling rivalry between Jacob (Israel) and Esau (Edom), the prophecy condemns Edom for its arrogant pride and, most grievously, for celebrating and participating in the destruction of Jerusalem. God declares that Edom’s treachery will be turned back on its own head; they will be utterly cut off.
