1And as he was passing by, he saw a man blind from birth.
2And his disciples asked him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
4We must work the works of the one who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.
5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6After saying these things, he spit on the ground, made mud from the saliva, and applied the mud to the man’s eyes,
7and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.
8So the neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the one who used to sit and beg?”
9Some were saying, “This is he.” Others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” He himself kept saying, “I am he.”
10So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?”
11He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So after I went and washed, I received my sight.”
12And they said to him, “Where is that man?” He says, “I do not know.”
13They bring him to the Pharisees—the one who was formerly blind.
14Now it was the Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.
15So the Pharisees were also asking him again how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He applied mud to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
16Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there was a division among them.
17So they say to the blind man again, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”
18So the Jews did not believe concerning him—that he had been blind and had received his sight—until they summoned the parents of the one who had received his sight.
19And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”
20So his parents answered and said, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind;
21but how he now sees, we do not know, or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.”
22His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him to be the Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.
23For this reason his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24So for a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.”
25He therefore answered, “Whether he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know: though I was blind, now I see.”
26So they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27He answered them, “I have already told you, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You do not also want to become his disciples, do you?”
28And they reviled him and said, “You are that man’s disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he is from.”
30The man answered and said to them, “This is the amazing thing: that you do not know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes.
31We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he listens to that person.
32Never before has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.
33If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything.
34They answered him, “You were born completely in sins, and you are teaching us?” And they cast him out.
35Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
36He answered, “And who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?”
37Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.”
38He said, “I believe, Lord!” And he worshiped him.
39Then Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.”
40Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind too?”
41Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin. But now you say, ‘We see’; your sin remains.”
