And it happened in that same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, that Hananiah son of Azzur the prophet, who was from Gibeon, said to me in the house of Yahweh, in the sight of the priests and all the people:
“Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.
Within two years’ time I am bringing back to this place all the vessels of the house of Yahweh that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and carried to Babylon.
And Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who went to Babylon, I am bringing back to this place, declares Yahweh, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.”
Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the sight of the priests and in the sight of all the people who were standing in the house of Yahweh.
And Jeremiah the prophet said, “Amen! May Yahweh do so! May Yahweh confirm your words that you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the house of Yahweh and all the exiles from Babylon to this place.
Only hear now this word that I am speaking in your ears and in the ears of all the people:
The prophets who were before me and before you from of old prophesied against many lands and against great kingdoms, of war and disaster and pestilence.
The prophet who prophesies of peace—when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that Yahweh has truly sent him.”
Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke-bar from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it.
And Hananiah spoke in the sight of all the people, saying, “Thus says Yahweh: In this same way I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from off the neck of all the nations within two years’ time.” And Jeremiah the prophet went his way.
Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke-bar from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, saying:
“Go and say to Hananiah: Thus says Yahweh: You have broken bars of wood, but in their place you will make bars of iron.
For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they shall serve him; and I have even given him the beasts of the field.”
Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, “Hear now, Hananiah: Yahweh has not sent you, but you have made this people trust in a lie.
Therefore thus says Yahweh: Behold, I am sending you away from off the face of the earth; this year you shall die, because you have spoken rebellion against Yahweh.”
And Hananiah the prophet died that same year, in the seventh month.
